J.W. “Red” Childers
J.W. “Red” Childers, age 90 of Roswell, died September 23, 2013. Mr. Childers was a distinguished World War II veteran of the United States Army, and a deacon for many years at Harmony Grove Baptist Church. He was a well-known and beloved southern gospel singer, sharing his passion with others for over 60 years in numerous churches and choirs, including with the “Senators” quartet. Mr. Childers was preceded in death by his loving wife of almost 67 years, Frances. He is survived by his two daughters, Melonee Bates of Cumming and Petrelia Lawhorn of Roswell; granddaughter, Joy Thompson of Ball Ground; grandsons, Twyford Red Hamil of Roswell, Rodney Hamil of Dawsonville, Lance Hamil of Cumming, and Daniel Lawhorn of Canton, and thirteen great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 1 PM on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at Harmony Grove Baptist Church, with burial to follow at Green Lawn Cemetery. The Childers family will receive friends from 1-4 PM and 6-9 PM on Tuesday, September 24 at Northside Chapel Funeral Directors in Roswell.
