There have been many ups and downs and wins and losses for all of the Austell school’s programs, yet through it all, there have been several accomplished teams and individuals that have contributed to the Eagles’ success.
It that vein, the school decided to start an athletic hall of fame, with the first class of inductees slated to be enshrined the week of South Cobb’s home football game against Hillgrove on Nov. 1.
According to athletic director Isaac Kelly, South Cobb principal Ashley Hosey and former athletic director Chuck Stines spoke last year about an athletic hall of fame last year. When Stines retired over the summer and Kelly took over, they spoke more in depth to get it started.
“This is long overdue,” Kelly said. “The idea had been floating around but really took off last year when the football team played at Harrison. They were inducting their latest hall of fame at the game, and our administration took notes.
“There have been some parents and members of the community who have expressed an interest in a hall of fame, and last year was our 60th anniversary, so that really helped push it as well. We couldn’t get it done in time then, but we’re committed to making it happen this year. It would be a big uplift for the community.”
The school’s plan is to accept nominations through Sept. 27. Voting will take place the first week of October, giving administrators enough time to contact the inductees before the Nov. 1 enshrinement day.
“We already have about 13 to 14 nominations so far just based on word of mouth,” Kelly said. “We’ve also made some announcements at our home football games. We want this first class to be a great class.”
Nominations can be made by competing an online form through the school’s website at www.cobbk12.org/southcobb, by clicking on the “SCHS Hall of Fame Nomination Form” link.
