Prep Roundup: Lassiter wins region’s No. 1 seed

Lassiter clinched the No. 1 seed of Region 5AAAAAA on Thursday, beating Woodstock 10-2 in a five-inning game shortened by the mercy rule.

The final unbeaten team in region play, the Lady Trojans (14-2, 6-0) will close their region schedule Tuesday at Roswell, then will play out the regular season with a series of non-region opponents.

The game was within reach after Woodstock’s half of the fifth inning, as it only trailed Lasiter 4-2, but the Lady Trojans responded with a six-run inning to take charge and envoke the mercy rule.

Sydney Kayler was 2-for-3 while Elise Sandberg had a pair of RBIs.

Piper Wagner (8-0) struck out one, walked none and scattered seven hits. She also had a double from the plate.

Harrison 12, McEachern 0 (5 inn.): Emily Kachel allowed two hits and struck out 12 as the Lady Hoyas earned a Region 4AAAAAA victory.

Harrison scored in all five innings, but it broke the game open with a six-run third.

Abby Broome was 2-for-2 with a double and drove in three runs. Rachel Farris finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Lindley Bruce added two hits and drove in two.

The Lady Hoyas will travel to South Cobb on Tuesday.

Sprayberry 9, Osborne 1 (5 inn.): Katie Tokos batted 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs to lead the Lady Yellow Jackets to the Region 7AAAAA victory at home.

Kayleigh Breh was 3-for-3 and scored twice, while Julia Abney and Katie Reed each had two hits for Sprayberry (7-10, 2-3), which totaled 15 hits and broke open a 4-1 lead with a four-run fourth inning.

Charlie Smith, who batted 1-for-3 with two RBIs, allowed one earned run on two hits and struck out eight in the complete game win.

Sprayberry will travel to Cambridge on Tuesday, while Osborne will be at South Cobb on Monday.

Kennesaw Mountain 3, North Cobb 0: Kathryn Woody (12-1) pitched a two-hit shutout and struck out three to help the host Lady Mustangs over their Region 4AAAAAA rival.

Kennesaw Mountain (15-1, 5-0) scored all of its runs in the fourth.

Maddie Lewis was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Abby Chandler had a hit and a RBI, while Lilly Wright singled and scored and Kelly McGrail also singled.

Kennesaw Mountain will travel to Hillgrove on Tuesday.

North Cobb will host the 17-team Warrior Classic today and Saturday. Games will be played at North Cobb, Marietta, Adams Park and the Acworth Sports Complex.

Pope 4, Northview 2: The Lady Greyhounds held a 4-0 lead through five innings and held on for the Region 7AAAAA road win.

Lindsey Walsh gave up two runs — one earned — on five hits and struck out seven to earn the complete-game victory.

Lauren Palace was 2-for-3 with two stolen bases for Pope (9-7, 3-2), which had nine hits, while Megan Metzinger batted 3-for-3 with a double, stolen base and a run scored. Ellyn Strother had a hit and an RBI. Kelly Barnhill also had an RBI.

Pope will be at Riverwood on Tuesday.

VOLLEYBALL

Walker sweeps tri-match:
Brook Warner had 28 kills and six blocks to help the Lady Wolverines sweep a tri-match from Wheeler (25-10, 25-16) and Mount Pisgah Christian (25-15, 25-11).

Sasha Fazylov finished with 12 kills and 12 digs, while Jordan Tasman had eight kills, 10 digs and five aces. Anna Chocallo added 20 digs.

The Lady Wolverines (15-5) will host Whitefield Academy and Mount Paran Christian in an Area 4A tri-match Tuesday.

Whitefield Academy earns split: The Lady Wolfpack split a tri-match, beating Pebblebrook (28-26, 25-11) but losing to host Fellowship Christian (25-13, 25-18).

Kate MacPhail had 23 assists, nine digs and six aces for Whitefield, while Olivia Nicholas had six kills, seven digs and four aces. Kelsey Butler contributed nine kills and six digs. Anna Long totaled 11 digs, six kills and three blocks.

Whitefield will travel to Walker on Tuesday for an Area 4A tri-match with Mount Paran Christian.

Lassiter takes one of two: The host Lady Trojans beat Sprayberry (25-13, 25-10), but they lost in three sets to Sequoyah (25-23, 21-25, 25-19).

Libby Bochniak had a double-double for Lassiter (17-10) with 16 kills, 15 digs and four aces. Sam Link added 27 assists, 11 digs and six aces, while Annie Chandler had 18 digs.

Lassiter will have five matches Saturday in a play date at South Forsyth.
