MARIETTA — A 28-year-old woman remains in the hospital with serious injuries after a Sunday shooting at a Bells Ferry Road apartment complex.

The woman was shot in the abdomen at the Laurel Hills Preserve apartment community on Bells Ferry Road, east of Interstate 75 and west of Barrett Parkway, according to Officer David Baldwin of the Marietta Police Department.

The injury is considered serious but not life-threatening.

The victim approached the apartment of Melissa Horton, 30, the alleged shooter, in Building 36 of the complex and shouted from the parking lot that she wanted to speak with Horton, Baldwin said.

Horton came down stairs, Baldwin said, and a verbal and physical altercation followed.

“In an effort to intimidate the victim, she displayed a firearm,” Baldwin said.

That’s when another woman tried to separate the two and the gun went off, with a single shot hitting the victim.

Horton was arrested at the scene and is charged with felony counts of aggravated assault and aggravated battery.

The name of the victim has not been released.
