1 dead, 2 injured in south Georgia lightning strike

BAINBRIDGE, Ga. (AP) — Sheriff's officials in south Georgia say a lightning strike has killed a man and left two others injured.

Decatur County Sheriff's officials say 21-year-old Mauselio Gomez died when he was struck by lightning Monday morning. Authorities say his 18-year-old brother and a co-worker were both injured. The extent of their injuries was not immediately clear.

WALB-TV reports the men were farm workers and were struck by lightning as they were walking along a road in Bainbridge.

Bainbridge is about 40 miles northwest of Tallahassee, Fla.

Earlier primary, longer runoffs planned for Georgia

By Christina A. Cassidy, Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) — When a federal judge reset Georgia's election calendar, the move affected more than just state and county election officials.

It means candidates running for office must also consider an earlier primary and the possibility of a longer runoff as they map out their plan for victory.

The stakes are nowhere higher than in in the race for Georgia's open U.S. Senate seat. A runoff in the GOP primary is all but certain with a crowded field of well-funded candidates. Meanwhile, Democrats are hopeful a strong candidate can easily navigate the primary and prepare for a showdown in the fall.

Campaign strategists say a longer runoff will allow candidates to raise more money and take momentum. For the voters, it will likely mean a longer period of more intense advertising.

Suspect in south Georgia triple shooting arrested

WOODBURY, Ga. (AP) — Sheriff's officials in southwestern Georgia say a man has been arrested in a triple shooting that left an elderly woman dead and two other people critically injured.

Meriwether County Sheriff's Officials said Monday that 53-year-old Timothy Chambley is being held without bond on charges of murder, aggravated battery and kidnapping. Authorities say the man was arrested early Sunday morning at a relative's house in Powder Springs, Ga.

Sheriff Chuck Smith says Chambley is accused in a July 20 shooting in Woodbury — about 50 miles northeast of Columbus.

Authorities say after the three victims were shot, an unidentified 6-year-old child was also abducted and was dropped off unarmed at a house in Pine Mountain, Ga. Chambley's relationship with the child is unclear.

No word on whether Chambley has an attorney.
