ACWORTH — A 58-year-old Douglasville man died in a single-vehicle wreck along Dallas Acworth Highway near Allatoona High School just before 4 p.m. Friday.

Investigators with Cobb Police Department’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program said the driver of a maroon 1994 Dodge Ram pickup truck was traveling northbound on Dallas Acworth Highway when he left the eastern edge of the road and struck a fire hydrant, according to Officer Michael Bowman, a spokesman for the department.

The vehicle re-entered the road, crossed the northbound and southbound lanes of Dallas Acworth Highway and then traveled about 120 feet down a steep embankment on the western side of the road before coming to a stop.

The driver of the pickup was James H. Diethorn, 58, of Douglasville. It is believed that a medical condition may have contributed to the crash.

The Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the crash and pronounced Diethorn dead at the scene.

Although the investigation is still active, no charges are expected to be filed. Anyone with information is asked to call (770) 499-3987.
