KENNESAW — Next week, Kennesaw City Councilwoman Cris Welsh will join 100 other city leaders from throughout the country to meet with first lady Michelle Obama at the White House to celebrate cities that have succeeded in addressing the fitness and health needs of their residents.

Welsh will spend Tuesday and Wednesday in Washington, D.C., meeting with the first lady and participating in a focus group with 20 other city leaders.

The focus group will be led by Kathleen Sebelius, secretary for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and is aimed at discussing how cities can better implement the National League of Cities “Let’s Move! Cities, Towns and Counties” campaign to combat childhood obesity, a major component of the first lady’s “Let’s Move!” comprehensive nationwide health initiative launched in 2010.

Welsh said she was notified of the invitation via email a couple of weeks ago and was told last week she could invite another city leader to accompany her. She chose Jeff Drobney, Kennesaw’s assistant city manager, because she said he’s the “biggest champion on city staff” for the cause. The council approved Welsh’s request for attendance at its Monday meeting and voted to pay for her two-night hotel stay for $398.

After filling out paperwork for White House security clearance and cancelling a family trip to Mexico, Welsh said the prospect of talking with the first lady about Kennesaw wellness initiatives is still a bit unreal.

“I can’t wait,” she said. “This is such a great opportunity for our city to be recognized for all the hard work we do.”

Welsh actively volunteers with Fit City Kennesaw, a city-wide initiative launched in 2012 to address the increasing rate of obesity and concerns over the health of Kennesaw residents. The goal of the program is to help children, teens and adults become more active through organized physical activities and other health-related programs, including free workout classes and trail runs.

While in D.C., Welsh said she hopes to emphasize to “Let’s Move!” leaders that the online tools and metrics put in place have helped her explain to others more about the goal of Fit City Kennesaw. For example, the city was awarded medals earlier this year for reaching different health and wellness goals through the program.

“It helps me and makes it so I can talk with people about these different areas we’re working on,” she said.

She also hopes to share her experiences with Kennesaw’s Kilometer Kids program, a 12-week program sponsored by the Atlanta Track Club that provides running coaches for local children twice a week at Swift-Cantrell Park.

The program has about 148 runners, who will end the course by running in the Run for Wounded Heroes on Aug. 4, part of the Kennesaw Grand Prix 5K Series. The program costs $25, which pays for the race registration.

“When I originally ran for office, I wanted to get people involved in fitness,” she said. “A huge part of that mission has been led by our 27 volunteer coaches who love doing it and always show up.”

Isn't she in the "Healthy" business in her real job? I thought it was illegal for elected officials to profit from their public life??? Aren't her efforts just a taxpayer funded marketing program for her chiropractor business? I hope someone is watching this!

Could be trouble,

"Healthy Business" should be everyone's "job". However if your idea of being healthy is ingesting a zillion diet Cokes, then I guess you might want or need someone to help you understand the concept of being physically fit. Let me guess, are you just afraid of someone actually doing in their personal life what they preach, or would you have any possible thought of that...

Please tell me how she if profiting. 1). She isn't being paid to go to Washington for Eaton Chiropractic, 2). She paid her own air fare, 3). She's going as part of the Fit City Initiative for Kennesaw, 4). Jeff Drobney is accompanying her as a representative as well. Now, do you think someone is going to fly, drive, or take a plane to Kennesaw from Washington DC just to get adjusted? Get real! Also, on the speaking circuit, the speaker's professional background is always announced, printed, etc. in order to inform the audience of their expertise in the area. Stop all the whining until you know more about what you're talking about rather than simply whining about the lack of facts you know!

I bet Welch's business is booming. I think she is a perfect example of why it should be LEGAL to PROFIT from your position. I guess it's only illegal if you get caught...She is doing great things with her initiaive but unfortunately the law says she can't profit personally directly or indirectly. Oops..how can she stop now she's at the White House!?!? I beleive the state calls this a serious crime. Keep up the good work Ksaw! Welch just adds to the list of shenanigans that keep going on.

Let me get this straight, what you are interested in shouldn't be a part of what you bring to the government. How goofy, if you only want someone totally uninformed of what they are doing and offer leadership on that. Sounds like we already have a bigger problem other then fat, its called being uninformed aka, ignorant and wanting to stay that way.

First of all, learn how to spell your elected officials name, it would lend more value to your post. Second, She hasn't ever tried to hide her affiliation with her business from the public. Third, she's never been paid for any health event she's led or volunteered for in the City. Fourth, she doesn't promote her business at the events. Five, the events for Fit City hasn't needed a vote by the Council for her to have to recuse herself since she doesn't receive a paycheck. Sixth, She paid her own airfare. Seventh, She was invited to represent the City. Eighth, this is what one would hope their elected officials would desire to do - represent the City well! Ninth, If you have proof of her profiting, provide it otherwise you're simply assuming and spreading rumors (part of Kennesaw's problem). Tenth, her business doesn't contract with the city, state, or national government as Metro Ambulance (which is obviously the profiting from your position you're speaking of). Sounds like you have a personal grudge against Mrs. Welsh and it's showing. You're doing a poor job of hiding behind aliases.

VERY interesting math by "Cobb Reporter". The Kennesaw council used to be 3-2 against the Mayor, with Cris Welch, Bruce Jenkins and Bill Thrash the majority. Tim Killingsworth and Jeff Duckett ALWAYS side with the Mayor. Upon the death of Mr. Thrash the council was then at a 2-2 split.

I find it VERY interesting that "Cobb Reporter" tallies the situation as 3-2 with Cris Welch in the minority. It's interesting because Matthew Reidemann was just installed in Bill's seat last week and has attended only one council meeting so far. Yet apparently "Cobb Reporter" has some inside information as he's obviously tagged Mr. Reidemann as an ally of the Mayor, making the vote 3-2, with Jenkins and Welch usually opposed. And they are usually opposed for good reason.

'I find it VERY interesting that "Cobb Reporter" tallies the situation as 3-2 with Cris Welch in the minority'

-------------------------------------------------

Common sense applies here.

With a 2-2 split no Mayor is going to appoint someone who will vote against them, even if it is going to be for only a few months.

As a PR exercise, the Mayor shot himself in the foot not appointing the widow to the seat. He expected, probably correctly, that the widow would be likely to be 'against' him on some issues.

The Mayor probably should have left the seat vacant until the election as he could break any tie with his vote in 2-2 situations.

As to who I support. I have never voted for any of them and don't intend to in the future.

Perhaps Ms. Welsh can ask Mrs. O and Ms. Sebelius why they objected so highly to the little girl getting a lung transplant a couple weeks ago, specifically why Ms. Sebelius was so incredibly heartless about her death-panel decision NOT to give the little girl a waiver so she could get a lung transplant and not die! A judge had to overturn this heartless Obama-appointee/Democrat's decision. Ask Mrs. O how she would feel if it was one of her little girls who had to die because the GOVERNMENT said she could not have the medical care needed to keep her alive! Oh wait, the two Obama girls are likely going to have free health care their entire lives, not under Obamacare government/bureaucratic death panels, but the very, very best, so that when they return from their many varied and expensive taxpayer-funded trips to exotic lands they can recover from the third world illnesses they encounter. Sheesh.

Dear "Cobb Reporter",

It is clearly obvious from your comments that you are a friend of Kennesaw Mayor Mark Mathews.

It is true that Dr. Welsh is in the 3-2 minority on council. That is because the Mayor has 2 council men in his back pocket, and that is known by all.

Dr. Welsh has single handedly led the effort to increase health awareness in the city.

If the other councilmen cared about their city, they could also lead in her manner and accomplish something for the city.

Name ONE thing the others have done??!!

With the exception of serving military don't have to pay their garbage bills anymore, nobody else on council has come up with anything.

The city of Kennesaw would be SO MUCH better off if they had a whole council full of Dr. Welsh's instead of the entrenched "good old boy" system that has taken over city hall.

Sorry your claim that Ms Welsh is a "Kennesaw leader" is vastly overblown.

She is just one of 5 council persons and if you break down the council split she is in the group in the minority (3 for the Mayor 2 usually in opposition).

She also led the charge about the Mayor having a conflict of interest with his being a senior member of Metro Ambulance and also working as Kennesaw Mayor. That of course went nowhere.

So she isn't 'leading' anything any more than a tail wags a dog.

To attack Mrs Welsh in this manner is a cheap shot and very tacky. I do not agree with her or any of the Kennesaw officials on everything, but when I have something to say to them I do so under my real name . You posters who use assumed names are simply cowards.

You know out of all the Mayor and Council Members, You always see Cris Eaton-Welsh with her name attached to something that is with the public being involved. These programs that she so graciously volunteers for on her own time is actually a cut above what 2 of the City Council Members ever do and this includes the Mayor. Unless it has to do with Golf or freebies, you really do not hear their names except to go against Cris and Bruce Jenkins. Mark is one snake in the grass mayor and it will all catch up with him. The people in Kennesaw do appeciate the Eaton Family for their constant involvement somewhere. There are a few and I have heard it from their mouths that they can not stand the Eatons and they think they are above all. That is not true. If you whoever you are feel you can do much better than Cris, then shag your butt up to the plate and do beter than her. Stop all this! Why is there so much hatred in such a small southern town. This mayor and certain members of the Council are on their way out. Got a real name? No Guts? Then stop hiding behind an alias.

Mr. Harris: You are FAR from a Cobb Reporter. The internet has allowed many unqualified people to give themselves unearned titles. Griping about literally everything around ones self on the internet doesn't make one a reporter, simply an unhappy, miserable blogger. There's a way to tell the same story to engage and make the public think rather than slamming opinions in their face. I would also ask, if you consider yourself a 'reporter' why hide behind an alias, sign your name as 'reporters' do, to get the credit for their hard work and writing abilities? When you enter a building, why hide your camera, why not walk in with it slung around your neck or with a camera man, as 'reporters' do? Anyone with the proper Journalism education, and even those with none, knows your post and blog site simply exist because you have chosen to spread your misery on everyone around you. Sir, if there is absolutely nothing you enjoy about living in our area, why would you want to remain here? Most people who are as negative as your posts tones are and your blog site is, are usually a reflection of someone who is extremely unhappy and simply wants everyone around them to be just as unhappy. I challenge you to write one positive blog or post for every three negative, complaining ones. Do you believe that to be possible?

Parents are the problem with childhood obesity. They allow their kids to eat junk and plpay video games all day. School lunches are horrible for kids as well. We should stop serving lunch at school and make parents pack a lunch every day. The school lunch programs are a waste of money and serve carbs and more carbs. The middle and high schools so nothing during PE class. Observe Lovingggod MS and Hillgrove HS where the kids are "hanging out" and texting for a hour outside every day. Ridiculous! Parents are the problem when their kids aren't educated and are obese!
