DEAR EDITOR:

What is the big @#!%@ deal about Paula Deen’s using a “racial slur”? Did this happen on national television just in the last few days? NO!!! What she said (apparently, exactly what it was must be so awful that her precise words cannot be published) slipped between her lips years ago. While I was teaching high school in the Atlanta area until recently, I can’t say how many times I heard one black student call another the derogatory “N-word.” Did anyone chastise them? Nopie, nopie.

God help us all that have used an unflattering epitaph in our lifetimes. Who among us hasn’t told a joke that deprecates some portion of our society, like blondes, Polish folks, “rednecks,” etc.? Is it OK for an African-American to refer to a Caucasian as “whitey,” “honkey” or “snowflake,” among other derogatory slurs? It happens frequently.

Bottom line: It seems like the mainstream media is so hard up for solid news in attempt to avoid the real truth about the multiple scandals arising in D.C., that they pounce upon Paula Deen for “fresh meat.” The likes of a celebrity chef are more newsworthy than America’s commander-in-chief making a fool of himself at home and abroad? When even Bill Press criticizes Barack Obama, even the most fawning fans of our lead- from-behind leader ought to sit up and take notice.
