The Kennesaw Parks and Recreation Department, in cooperation with the Cobb Schools Foundation, will conduct the Pig Tales Writing Competition for students in grades kindergarten through eighth attending any public, private, or home school in Cobb County. The competition will culminate in an announcement of winners at the Pigs & Peaches BBQ Festival on Aug. 24. The competition’s presenting sponsor is SCANA Energy.

Students are invited to submit an original short story or essay, in 750 words of less, about parks, picnics and summertime fun. First-, second- and third-place winners will be chosen among students rising into three grade categories: Kindergarten through second grade, third grade throught fifth grade and sixth grade through eighth grade. Entries may be written for the purpose of the competition or as part of a school assignment. Works can be fiction or non-fiction and each student is limited to one entry.

Awards include movie, Georgia Aquarium, and Atlanta Hawks tickets, barbecue meal tickets, Festival Kid Zone attraction passes, and T-shirts and goodie bags. The grand prize is a bicycle. Submissions may be typed or handwritten and must be submitted by mail postmarked by Aug. 9 to Cobb Schools Foundation, Attention: Sheri Brante, 514 Glover St., Marietta, GA 30060. A committee of professional educators, sponsors, and city staff will judge based on creativity, presentation and correspondence to the theme. Winners will be announced no later than Aug. 22.
