A Cobb Police officer shot and killed an armed man in the 3500 block of Dallas-Acworth Highway near Allatoona High School after being dispatched in response to “a domestic situation” at about 8:10 p.m. on Friday, said Officer Mike Bowman.
Police on Saturday identified the deceased man as Andrew Lambeth, 37, of Acworth.
The shooting occurred at 3520 Dallas Acworth Highway in Acworth but police did not say if Lambeth lived at the address where the shooting occurred.
The house where the shooting occurred is owned by Michael Lee Turner, according to the most recent records on file with the Cobb County Tax Assessor’s Office.
The Cobb Police news released did say, however, that officers responded to the scene at 3520 Dallas Acworth Highway in response to a domestic dispute. And when they arrived, they said they encountered a man who was armed with a handgun and “possibly suicidal.”
There were no other injuries during this incident and the officer who was involved is not being identified at this time and has been placed on routine administrative leave.
“While the officer was in route to the location, 911 operators had an open line to the residence and relayed to the officer that they believed they heard gun shots,” Bowman said. “When the officer arrived on scene, he confronted a male suspect out in the yard armed with a gun. The suspect was given verbal commands and did not comply with the verbal commands. The firearm was discharged and the officer was forced to fire upon the suspect because of the fact that he believed his life was in jeopardy.”
The suspect died at the scene, Bowman said.
Cobb County Crimes Against Persons Unit and Cobb County Internal Affairs Unit are investigating.
