Jon Gillooly, a veteran of the Marietta Daily Journal reporting staff, has been promoted to assistant news editor effective immediately.

Over the past nine years, Gillooly has covered everything from Cobb schools to the city of Marietta government, the local legislative delegation and Cobb County government.

“Jon knows our county inside and out and has developed a trusted network of news sources,” said Leo Hohmann, who oversees local news content as MDJ’s news editor. “He will provide invaluable knowledge and guidance to our reporting staff. He’s committed to helping us take our local coverage up a notch and has earned this opportunity to be a newsroom leader.”

A native of Orlando, Fla., Gillooly, who lives in Marietta, earned a bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in political science from Maryville College in Tennessee in 2001. His senior thesis was titled “Comparative Revolutionaries: Lenin, Mao and Khomeini.”

Intending to become a history teacher, Gillooly’s experience writing for the college newspaper, as well as his admiration for journalists William F. Buckley Jr. and H.L. Mencken, spurred him to become a newspaperman.

Following college, Gillooly wrote for The Mineral Daily News-Tribune in West Virginia before joining The Marietta Daily Journal in 2004. Since then, he has covered just about all aspects of Cobb County for the MDJ.

Despite his new role as assistant news editor, readers will continue to see Gillooly’s byline in the Marietta Daily Journal.

His current beat is the Cobb County government and he will continue to cover the Board of Commissioners.

Nobody in Cobb County deserves this more than Jon. I worked with JG for 4 years. I truly believe that he has affected change in the county. City and county government can't hide from him!

Gillooly is a rarity.

A true newsman with the brains to understand what details are important and need to be reported and the chutzpah to ask the pointed questions that need to be asked. Combined with his ability to fully convey a story in clear and coherent manner...and the MDJ is lucky to have him, as is Cobb County.

Congrats, Gillooly! And thanks.

Excellent and about time! Not sure what the MDJ would do without Gillooly, whose contributions to our county have made such a difference. All the best, Jon.
