MARIETTA — A student who was about to graduate from Osborne High School will be cited for speeding, failure to maintain lane and reckless driving, which police say caused a wreck on Fairground Street on Wednesday.

Jose Zamora, 18, who remains in critical condition at Kennestone Hospital, is a senior at Osborne High School and was set to graduate in Thursday night’s ceremony. He had just left a rehearsal for that graduation and was rushing to be at work by 4 p.m. when the crash occurred Wednesday.

Principal Josh Morreale said the accident happened an hour after practice for the graduation ended.

Zamora, was traveling north on Fairground Street, when he accidentally crossed over into oncoming traffic, said Officer David Auld with Marietta Police Department.

That’s when a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche, driven by Acie James Farrey, 31, of Morrow struck Zamora’s 1996 Honda Civic, causing it to spin into the path of a 2012 Ford E350 cutaway van, a Cobb School District maintenance vehicle driven by Danny Roark, 53, of Acworth.

The school van struck the Honda before the crushed car was pinned against a fence.

Morreale said he was made aware of the accident Wednesday afternoon as Osborne High School administration informed Zamora’s family.

Morreale said he rushed to Kennestone to sit with the Zamora family before they were able to see him Wednesday night.

The principal said the family was upset yet thankful for the support.

He described Zamora as an “awesome …and likable person” who enjoys playing soccer in his free time.

“I look forward to handing (Zamora) his diploma when he is ready,” said Morreale.

Morreale said it was a hard decision whether to mention Zamora’s condition at the graduation celebration.

“The senior class is sad and Jose is in all of our thoughts right now,” Morreale said.

Police said no alcohol or drugs were involved in the cause of the wreck and that Zamora is a legal resident with a valid driver’s license.

Roark, and a passenger in the school van, Joe Carver, were transported to Kennestone Hospital and released, said a spokesperson for WellStar. Farrey, the driver of the Chevrolet, was unharmed.

Auld said the maintenance van had extensive damage and has been released back to the Cobb School District.

“I would be surprised if all vehicles involved in the crash aren’t total losses,” Auld said.

All that matters is that Zamora is okay. We are praying for you and relieved that you will recover. However, the fact that the news even considered to include Zamora's legal status is simply ignorant. Just because he is Hispanic does not mean he is an illegal immigrant. IGNORANCE!

The legal status of Mr. Zamora was volunteered by police. The news reporter asked the question and it was answered by the police spokesman. Don't rush to blame the "po-lice."

The po-lice now have to include "that [person] is a legal resident with a valid driver’s license" in their statements about people with non-Smith names?

We should be ashamed of our country and more importantly of ourselves, but at least our anti-Immigrant bigotry keeps a certain felon self-employed at his very own 501-c-4, right?

Now that 501-c-4's have been in the news so prominently, does anybody else wonder about a felon running a 501-c-4?

How long until everyone's favorite felon comes out with a statement about this kid bring an "anchor baby," claiming he and his parents and/or grandparents should be deported?

Interestingly, I had the same thought run through my head when it was mentioned about being a legal resident with a valid license. Let's see if the esteemed Marietta daily Journal uses the same phrase in any other vehicle accidents

Wow, let's not let an opportunity to dig at a certain former Marine get in the way of your liberal, hate-filled agenda.

And speaking of 501 C organizations being PERSECUTED by the Obama IRS, when do you think that scandal is going to be connected to your favorite president? No doubt he and the Democrats who have used the IRS as a tool of an oppressive regime are just salivating to get their hands on all of our health records as well, as they ramp up their death panels. You should be so proud.
