School board should target delinquent taxes

DEAR EDITOR:

One of the places Cobb School Board members should be looking to cut into the $86 million budget shortfall is property taxes from absent and delinquent landlords.

We have absentee landlords in our neighborhood who haven’t paid property taxes in years while renting to families with school-age children. When did that become fair and financially responsible?

The Tax Office will tell you it takes three to four years just to bring a property to the courthouse steps for an auction. Why so long and why no real-time accountability? Let’s find these landlords and, if that’s not possible, let’s look into a pay-as-you-go fee for “renters” (per child) and let them recoup their education expenses from the property owner. If that causes lower attendance or more dropouts, so be it!
