Prep Roundup: Walton rolls into region final

Walton’s boys tennis team cruised to a 3-0 win over Lassiter on Tuesday and into the Region 5AAAAAA championship.

A doubles sweep keyed the victory. Crews Enochs and Trevor Croyder won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1, while Raymond Zhang and Liam Villante had a shutout at No. 2.

Singles ace Shaunish Mookerji added a 6-0, 6-0 win for Walton (12-1), which will host either Woodstock or Milton in Thursday’s championship.

North Cobb 3, Harrison 0: Jaryd Reese and Andre Canino each won in straight sets to lead the Warriors into the Region 4AAAAAA finals.

Reese won 6-0, 6-1, Canino won 6-2, 6-0 and the doubles team of Bradford Lahmann and Jacob Hightower capped the match with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

North Cobb (16-1) will face Hillgrove in Thursday’s championship at Marietta.

Hillgrove 3, Kennesaw Mountain 2: Henry Squire’s 7-6 (3), 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles clinched the match for the Hoyas in their Region 4AAAAAA semifinal.

Matt Hill won 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 1 singles for Hillgrove (15-3), while Maddux Mitchell captured a 7-6 (2), 6-2 win at No. 2 singles.

Kennesaw Mountain’s Matt Gainey and Justin Thomas combined for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory at No. 1 doubles. Brothers Ryan and Michael Deatrick won 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Walker 3, Mount Paran Christian 1: The No. 1 doubles team of Will Chocallo and Austin Newsome earned the decisive point in the semifinal match winning 6-1, 6-2, and the Wolverines will face North Cobb Christian for the Area 4A title.

Also winning in straight sets for Walker were Derek Brown and Alan Norsworthy at Nos. 1 and 2 singles.

Rico Washington put Mount Paran on the board with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.

Earlier in the day, Walker swept St. Francis 3-0 in the tournament opener. Norsworthy at No. 2 singles and both of Walker’s doubles teams all won 6-0, 6-0.

Mount Paran makes state playoffs: The third-seeded Eagles beat No. 2 seed Mount Pisgah 3-2 in the quarterfinals of the Area 4A tournament at Darlington before falling to No. 1 seed Walker 3-0 in the semifinals.

Mount Paran (11-6) qualified for the state tournament with the victory over Mount Pisgah. Luke Van De Vate rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles to clinch the match. He led 2-1 in the third set when Mount Paran’s No. 2 singles player lost, tying the contest at 2-all.

Davis Nelson won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while Drew Renno and Brent Foster combined for a 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles.

Mount Paran will face Whitefield Academy today in the area consolation match at Darlington.

GIRLS TENNIS

Hillgrove 3, Harrison 1:
The No. 2 doubles team of Elise Joyce and Scarlett Fernandez clinched the match with a grueling 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1 victory to put the Lady Hawks in the Region 4AAAAAA championship.

Hillgrove (13-4) will face Kennesaw Mountain on Thursday at Marietta.

Chioma Okonkwo won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Hannah Creech and Jaiden Massey won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.

Harrison’s Meredith Frost won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, Wendy Jhang was leading 6-0, 4-1 at No. 3 singles when Joyce and Fernandez clinched it.

Harrison and North Cobb will play Thursday for the region’s No. 3 seed.

Kennesaw Mountain 4, North Cobb 1: All three of the Lady Mustangs’ singles players prevailed, as did their No. 2 doubles.

Chika Okonkwo at No. 3 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Samantha Maddin and Ivy Ezatt finished at the same time, with Okonkwo winning 6-1, 6-0 and Maddin and Ezatt winning 6-4, 6-0.

Kennesaw Mountain’s other wins came from Samantha Armas (6-0, 6-0) at No. 1 singles and Nicole Croxton (6-1, 6-1) at No. 2.

Mount Pisgah Christian 3, Walker 2: The Lady Wolverines got wins from Mia Pattillo (6-0, 6-1) at No. 3 singles and Holly Harkins and Caroline Kunetz at No. 2 doubles (6-2, 7-6), but they couldn’t get the deciding point get in the Area 4A semifinals.

The match came down to No. 2 singles, where Carly Bloom lost a 6-4, 6-4 decision.

Walker, which swept King’s Ridge Christian in the first round of the area tournament, will host Excel Christian for the region’s third seed today.

Pope 3, Creekview 0: Taylor Reed and Kate Weber each won singles matches to lead the Lady Greyhounds to a win in the Region 7AAAAA quarterfinal and a spot in the Class AAAAA state tournament.

Reed won 6-4, 6-2 and Weber won 2-6, 6-0, 6-1. Katie Story and Lauren Husney won their doubles match 6-3, 6-1 to close out the match.

Pope later lost its semifinal with Cambridge 3-0.

The Lady Greyhounds will play for the No. 3 seed today against the loser of Tuesday’s Sequoyah-Northview match.

Mount Pisgah Christian 3, Mount Paran Christian 1: The Lady Eagles saw their season come to a close in the quarterfinals of the Area 4A tournament at Darlington.

Valentina Velasquez’s 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles made the match score 2-1, but Mount Paran (9-8) was unable to pick up two more points for the win.

BASEBALL

Mount Paran Christian 11, Walker 1:
Will Schnure went 4-for-4 with a double and drove in four to lead the Eagles to a Region 6A victory.

Matt McKenzie went 3-for-4 with a triple, Landon Faulkner was 2-for-3 with two doubles, Taylor Trammel had a home run and drove in two, Tyler Flowers had a hit and drove in three and Isaac Phillips was 2-for-2.

Cameron Bloebaum tripled and was driven in by Mitchell Golden for Walker’s only run.

Mount Paran Christian (18-2, 14-2) will host North Cobb Christian on Saturday. Walker (5-17, 5-12) will host Mount Pisgah Christian on Thursday.

Whitefield Academy 3, North Cobb Christian 2: Though the Eagles had a 4-3 edge in hits, one of those two hits for the Wolfpack was a two-run home run by Max Kemether.

Kemether also pitched a complete game, giving up two runs on four hits. He struck out eight and walked none.

Patrick Martin and Dylan Crumbley drove in North Cobb Christian’s runs with singles. Robert Gnann and Zach Cornell also had hits.

Cornell also started on the mound, striking out six.

Whitefield (8-12, 5-10 Region 6A) will host Mount Zion-Carroll today. North Cobb Christian (6-14, 2-14) will travel to Mount Paran Christian on Saturday.

Dominion Christian 4, Heritage School 3 (10 inn.): Riley Howard hit a walk-off home run in the 10th to seal the win.

The Knights (10-7) scored all three of their previous runs in the second inning, while Heritage tied it with two runs in the third and one in the fifth.

Brian Amburn was 2-for-5 at the plate to lead Dominion, which will host Weber next.

Late Monday

Mount Pisgah Christian 3, North Cobb Christian 2 (10 inn.):
An unearned run left the Eagles with the road loss.

Canon Robinson and Dylan Crumbley drove in runs for North Cobb Christian. Robinson finished 2-for-4 on the day, with Crumbley 2-for-5.

Zach Cornell, Patrick Martin and Drew Willman also had two hits apiece for the Eagles.

Rabon Martin left after five innings with the lead, but Mount Pisgah rallied to tie the game and eventually won after consecutive errors by North Cobb Christian in the 10th.

BOYS SOCCER

Campbell 4, Wheeler 1:
Monico Hernandez scored three goals to lead the Spartans to a non-region victory.

Jerren Nixon had a goal and an assist. Alejandro Hernandez also had an assist.

Julio Tellez made seven saves in goal for Campbell (10-5), which will host Woodstock on Friday.

Pope 3, Creekview 1: Tai Livenat scored two goals to put the Greyhounds on top in a Region 7AAAAA game.

Livenat scored the go-ahead goal in the first half after Creekview tied it at 1-all. He also gave the Greyhounds breathing room in the second half, with both of his goals unassisted.

Zach McCown scored Pope’s first goal on an assist by Franklin Robinson.

Sean Hatcher had five saves for Pope (7-5-1, 7-2), which will host Northview on Thursday.

Kennesaw Mountain 2, North Paulding 0: The Mustangs scored two second goals to get the non-region win.

Jose Elivalde assisted on goals from Rolando Crawford and Sal Adeboye, while Taylor Cotton had two saves for Kennesaw Mountain (9-6).

The Mustangs will be at North Cobb on Friday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Wheeler 1, Campbell 0:
Fernanda Silva scored with 1:02 left at Corky Kell Stadium, giving the Lady Wildcats their first win of the season.

Lauren Bramblett had four saves for Wheeler, which will travel to Etowah on Friday.

Kennesaw Mountain 1, North Paulding 1: The Lady Mustangs ended their non-region game tied at the end of regulation.

Kennesaw Mountain (9-6-1) took a 1-0 first-half lead after Lucie Urquhart fed a through ball to the left side to Nicole Guajardo, who placed a shot across the mouth of the the goal and into the lower corner of the net.

Meredith Bailey had seven saves for the Lady Mustangs. Lynn Davis collected one save in the final few minutes on senior night.

Kennesaw Mountain will be at North Cobb on Friday in a game that will determine the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds of Region 4AAAAAA.

Mount Paran Christian 1, Walker 0: Alex Reed fed a crossing pass to Charlotte Dayton who scored in the 73rd minute, giving the Lady Eagles the road win.

The contest, which was scoreless at halftime, did not count as a Area 7A game.

Courtney McKenzie had three first-half saves for Mount Paran (11-1, 5-0). Katie Sweeney stopped five in the second half.

Mount Paran will host North Atlanta on Thursday.

Kell 3, North Springs 0: The Lady Longhorns scored three first half goals in taking the Region 7AAAAA road win.

Elyse Vongdara finished with one goal and assisted on Megan Tynchuk’s score. Haley West assisted on Tracey Webster’s goal.

Savannah Corr had three saves, while Lindsay McCarthy totaled two for Kell (8-7-1, 5-5), which had 20 first-half shots and outshot North Springs 33-5 overall.

Kell will host Dunwoody on Friday.

BOYS LACROSSE

Lassiter 14, McIntosh 3:
The Trojans led 8-2 at halftime and cruised to the non-area road win.

Jack Fitzharris led Lassiter (11-2) with three goals, while Tom Barre, Corey John and Hunter Rowley each had two. David Olson and Alex Lipsky each added one goal and one assist.

Ryan Smith had eight saves for the Trojans, who will host Lovett on Thursday.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Hillgrove 19, River Ridge 3:
The Lady Hawks jumped ahead early and never looked back, building an 11-1 halftime lead.

Tianna Clark led Hillgrove with five goals, while Olivia Ellis had four goals and three assists. Marilyn Pruitt had four goals and two assists, Morgan Perone had three goals and Katrina Caruso had three goals and had two assists.

Hillgrove (7-4) will play Kennesaw Mountain on Friday in an Area 1AAAAAA home game.

BOYS GOLF

Walton 155, Cherokee 177, Sequoyah 179:
Michael Sheahan shot 37 to claim medalist honors and led the Raiders at Bradshaw Farms.

John Yi and Connor Edison each scot 39 for Walton, and Andrew Yowell finished with 40.

Walton’s will compete in the 15-team Falcon Invitational on Saturday at Reunion Golf Club in Hoschton.

Harrison 315, Mount Paran Christian 322: The Hoyas won the showdown at Brookstone Golf and Country Club.

Luke Schniederjans and Matt McMahon each carded a 77 to pace Harrison. Brian Greaves shot 80 and Sam Maryland 81.

Mount Paran’s Tyler Young played the course for the first time and fired a low score of 3-under 69.

Harrison is in action again Tuesday at Brookstone for the Region 4AAAAAA championship.
