Smyrna’s police department will host its first citizens’ police academy starting in May.

The program will run for 11 weeks, beginning May 20, on one night a week and one Saturday. The event times and days aren’t finalized yet, according to Officer Mike Smith with the department.

Participants will get a behind-the-scenes look at police operations and learn about criminal investigations, defense tactics, crime scene investigation, police ethics, firearms, juvenile crimes and K-9 operations, among other topics. Some lessons will be in a classroom setting, Smith said, and others will take a more hands-on approach.

All participants must be at least 18 years old and class sizes are limited to 15 people with priority granted to Smyrna residents. There is no cost to participate.

After the group of 15 is determined, the police chief will coordinate the most convenient day of the week for the group to meet, Smith said.

“This is Chief (David) Lee’s way of showing his dedication and commitment to the community,” Smith said. “It’s a way to allow the police department and community to get better acquainted and for the public to learn the reasons and tactics for handling legal situations.”

The person stalking me is obviously insane. This story had absolutely nothing to do w/ me, nor did I comment on it. Now I see 15 or so libel comments(posted by the same person) directed towards me. Maybe a restraining order is what I should seek against this ranting neighbor fellow.

You are truely a sad reflection on the way the city of Smyrna conducts business. I imagine the city of Smyrna has put you out there to be their convenient 'village idiot'. Your posts read like a 1st grader.

I guess by what you wrote that you meant your post was a cutting, ironic remark intended to wound. It was a form of wit intended to make its victim the butt of contempt or ridicule and that only in Smyrna would this need clarification. I agree with you 100 percent. In Smyrna, we would never in a million years make a cutting, ironic remark intended to wound, nor would we use wit to make a "victim" the butt of contempt of ridicule. I hope I clarified the true nature of Sm\yrna for you.

sar'-kas-m, noun

1-A cutting, often ironic remark intended to wound

2-A form of wit intended to make its victim the butt of contempt or ridicule

Only in Smyrna would this need clarification.

You got that one right, baby. Duh. Duh. Duh. Only from MK or Pat H. Now go get in your cars and spend your time riding around Hotlanta so you can come back and tell us what is being built elsewhere.

I think the point was made with this reply. Why would a person intend to wound another person? Why would a person want to make another person the butt of contempt or ridicule? Only by Pat H or MK would this be done. Sad, so sad.

Only somebody else transplanted here would be so mean. And you are one mean person. I pray for you and MK.

You are right about that. We in Smyrna are gentle souls and cannot relate to people that intend to wound, make someone the butt of contempt or ridicule. You are right on 100 percent about us in Smyrna. Truer words never spoken. Thanks.

And quite proud of it this needs clarification in Smyrna. Hope Smyrna will always stay that way.

I have had it with both of you, Pat and Mary. You put all these rants out here about Smyrna, yet I have yet see what you do for the good of society. I am not this Sean person and I think from the posts that people know by now Mary is just an unpleasant person that hates Smyrna and Pat H. is a defender. Move. Why in God's name somebody would live in a place they hate so much is a total mystery to me. Personally, I would give up everything I owned to move if I was as miserable as MK. It would be different if MK were contributing in a positive manner to improve what MK perceives to be deficiencies. Instead, she slams her beloved Max and talks to her imaginary Sean. Oh, my love, Max, my sweet love.

OH MK. A thrift store opened up by Ikea and Atlantic Station. Go early and don't go on the weekend. The Lexus' and Beemers will beat you out. Just thought I would let you know. And have you visited that great thrift store in Alph'retta? You know the one the soccer moms in Milton go to? I can't get my hands on stuff soon enough that the Mercedes moms don't try to grab it from me. I heard the talk about the fab finds in Smyrna-I said please don't go there. Don't invade my turf!

MK sets herself up for ridicule. If there is a good article about Smyrna, one can be guaranteed MK will not comment. Never. If there is something MK can attack about Smyrna, MK is there to pounce. MK makes no sense at all whatsoever and she gets worse by the post. Her unrequited love for Max is quite well known. One post alone droned senseless garbage about Woodstock, Duluth, Suwanee, Chamblee, Inman Park, Decatur, 4th Ward, the Beltline, and Inman Park. Senseless junk. I think she reads the Business Chronicle then jots something down from her something induced thoughts. A lot of the property she toots have been vacant for years, yet she regularly slams Smyrna. Has she ever done anything for her own community? From her constant anti-Smyrna rants, she travels more than most people do throughout metro Atlanta. Does she ever stay home and think about what she can contribute to her community? In my op, this is a sad little old woman wallowing in self-pity and there is nothing that can make her happy except maybe Max. In my own head, MK is a 2013 sadder version of Delta Dawn. Days gone by and she has given up ever being happy and she blames Smyrna (blames Max) for her quite obvious pain and unhappiness.

Actually, MK should be a paid consultant to the police so they don't make costly mistakes arresting innocent people and trampling on the constitution, which costs the "good" citizens of the lovely and desirable city of Smyrna tax dollars to pay claims.

Schooled in Smyrna weren't you? Thought so, their tests scores are stellar and a real selling point to people moving there.

I so agree with most of your points that are right on target. I don't agree anyone should be a paid consultant though. You are right in that this class will enlighten the ones that attend about profiling minorities and arresting them when they are innocent. It costs money to keep people in jail. Smyrna does have the most excellent schools from what I hear (although I went to school up north) and that is what attracts people to moving to Smyrna. Summer is the best in this city. Parks are alive, events abound, and it makes all of us proud to be here. It is refreshing to hear from someone that loves the city of Smyrna!

You are so wrong to defend such a caustic person. Mary feels free to come out here with her venom all the time. Mary regularly tramples on a city many people love. All Mary has contributed to this newspaper are caustic comments. Yes, it is absolutely wrong to accuse people of being drunk when they are not. Mary made that accusation of the Mayor of Smyrna with college kids in addition to. Is Mary a good citizen? No. Mary needs to get out of Smyrna. Mary has trampled on the constitution and she has cost the taxpayers money and continues to cost the taxpayers money with her continued requests for police presence and animal control, not only to Smyrna but also to the expense of Cobb County taxpayers, when her dozen plus calls have been found unmerited. Pat H and MK, you both need extreme counseling if you continue to live in a place you despise so much. I don't think there is anyone out here that has been more vocal about their hatred of their life as Mary and quite frankly people are tired of her continuous rants about how much better life is in this and that. Well shut up and go live there. I don't see anyone else except two people ranting about Smyrna -- pat H and MK Mary Kook.

Oh, please don't recommend that for the sake of the Police Department and other attendees. Don't want to constantly hear how Brookhaven, Roswell, etc. do things.

Kirkendoll doesn't have a dog in this fight. Her name shouldn't even be mentioned here. She believes the Smyrna police officers do a good job. It's the city's leaders that don't.
