Community leaders got together seven years ago with city officials with an idea to create a facility for special needs people to participate in athletics.
Horizon Field has a rubber surface for wheelchair accessibility, said James Albright of the Parks and Recreation Department.
People ranging from 5 years old to senior citizens compete in year-round baseball, summer kickball and soccer, thanks to fundraising efforts from the community, he said.
To showcase community support, the city of Acworth and the Special Needs Development Group will host an opening day April 19 at 6:30 p.m. for the original donors of the project.
Albright said this is the fifth opening day and should be the largest, with more than 200 athletes participating this season.
Horizon Field is at the Acworth Sports Complex, 4000 S. Main St., Acworth.
