School officials say Hurd will be honored at the DiGamma Kappa awards banquet March 19 for innovation in trans-media storytelling.
Hurd — who also produced and co-wrote “Terminator,” “Aliens” and other box office hits — is set to serve as the event’s keynote speaker, and will be featured in a public discussion before the banquet.
The American Film Institute has honored “The Walking Dead” on AMC as a top 10 television program in 2010 and 2012, and with an average of 12 million viewers the show is America’s most-watched scripted television drama.
DiGamma Kappa is the official broadcasting society at the University of Georgia.
