Firefighter Lonnie Nutt, who joined the Marietta City Fire Department in 1994, experienced a “medical issue” and collapsed, according to a release from Officer David Baldwin with Marietta Police.
Nutt was an engineer with Engine 53.
“When they arrived on the scene and begin to assist with the injured patient, Fire Engineer Nutt fell to the ground with a medical issue of his own,” the release states. “Firefighters from Marietta began diligently rendering care.”
He was taken by ambulance to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, where he was pronounced dead.
Since joining the Marietta Fire Department nearly 20 years ago, Nutt has served as a firefighter, inspector and investigator, in addition to engineer.
“The entire fire department family will greatly miss Fire Engineer Lonnie Nutt,” the release states.
Baldwin did not have additional information about the wreck that Nutt and his team were responding to Thursday afternoon.
