Media Specialist Pam Davis said there was an issue with wording of the agenda item, and the council will revisit the issue.
The city council decided last month to fight the Mobile Broadband Infrastructure Leads to Development Act, which would allow cellphone companies to sidestep zoning meetings before new towers could go up. Rep. Don Parsons (R-northeast Cobb) supports the bill, along with six other legislators.
City Manager Steve Kennedy previously urged the council to oppose House Bill 176, claiming the towers infringe on the local government’s authority to administer its zoning laws.
Cellphone companies could also control rents when towers are placed on public property, according to Council member Bruce Jenkins.
The council did, however, unanimously approve a beautification effort for the Kennesaw Village shopping center. The new owners of the center are focusing on drawing higher-paying customers and tenants and plan to make the center look more like downtown with aged brick and rooftop decorations.
The council heard from Lt. Craig Graydon of the police department regarding problems with people stealing recyclable items, such as metal, plastic and other items from trash bins. Council went as far as to create a proposed ordinance to try to deter some of the metal theft problems and allow the police department to eliminate some loopholes between when a person plans to steal trash and actually takes action.
If approved, the ordinance would deem commercial dumpsters and recycling bins equal to protection provided to households.
Graydon said the 23-year-old Acworth man who inspired the ordinance was stealing scrap metal to make rent payments because he was unemployed.
The council will discuss the ordinance at its March 18 meeting.
