MARIETTA — Cobb County Sheriff Neil Warren said Tuesday his office is taking a recent threat against a judge seriously.

“I will not tolerate any threats or acts of violence toward any citizen, law enforcement officer or court official,” Warren said, referring to a letter sent last month to a family member of Cobb Superior Court Judge Reuben Green.

James Edward Satterfield, 58, of Marietta was arrested Dec. 30, 2012, on charges of felony terroristic threats and acts. He remains in the Cobb County Jail without bond.

According to the warrant, Satterfield is accused of sending a letter addressed to Green’s wife sometime between Dec. 20 and Dec. 30.

“The letter threatened the judge and his wife by the accused stating … he would kill and eat their children,” the warrant states.

“He would cook them first to make them more palatable.”

In addition to these statements, the letter also said, “Please give a copy of this letter to police so that when you are slaughtered the public will know who were really responsible.”

The warrant does not indicate any relationship between Satterfield and Green or his family, but according to Cobb Superior Court records, Green presided over Satterfield’s divorce case between April 2011 and July 2012.

Satterfield was listed as the plaintiff in the civil case.

Green was contacted Tuesday about the threats and arrest but declined to comment.

Warren released a statement about the incident Tuesday.

“When claims such as this are reported to our office, we take it very seriously and move quickly with a thorough investigation and present our evidence to a Magistrate Judge,” he said. “In this specific case, the Magistrate found probable cause to issue an arrest warrant for Satterfield, and he was taken into custody the same day.”
