Kudos to the Mount Paran Christian School community for raising an incredible amount of money. (Mount Paran raises $16.5 million to buy Murray Arts Center, MDJ, Jan. 8). I would like to point out, however, that the school has hardly developed a “culture of philanthropy” in reaching this goal.
They have simply taught the children to work hard to achieve their desires, a worthy lesson in itself. To have taught philanthropy, the children and parents would have to have collected money to benefit others, not themselves. Though commendable, it is not philanthropy when members of a family, for example, work hard, pinch pennies, and save to buy themselves a new house, car, boat, or television. Mount Paran has simply done the same thing.
