MARIETTA — In addition to passing legislation that would block across-the-board tax increases and spending cuts, U.S. officials are considering whether to receive a $900 pay raise that would take effect in March.

“The House Republican Conference discussed this matter (Monday) and agreed to support a provision authored by Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick (R-Pennsylvania) to forego this for all civilian federal workers, including members of Congress and the Vice President. This is the bill I support,” U.S. Congressman Tom Price (R-Roswell) said in a statement Tuesday morning.

Members of Congress make $174,000 per year, with leaders making more.

They have not had a raise since 2009. President Barack Obama issued an executive order last week ending a two-year pay freeze for all federal employees, including members of Congress and Vice President Joseph Biden. Congress determines its own pay, but gets a cost-of-living raise each year — unless it votes to stop it.

Another Georgia Representative, John Barrow (D-Augusta) has been trying to gain support to block the scheduled cost-of-living raise and has asked colleagues to sign a letter to House leaders asking for a vote to stop the raise, as Congress has done for the past two years.

“Little things mean a lot, and Congress has no business getting a bonus in times like this,” Barrow said.

So far, he’s gotten more than 20 politicians to sign onto his letter, including U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop (D-Albany).
