Clothes, books, home décor, baby items — if you received any of these items for Christmas and don’t want to keep them, think twice before returning them for cash or store credit. Those unneeded gifts could help local residents throughout Cherokee County.

One Canton store, Second Chance Thrift Store & More, gives 100 percent of profits to serving those in the city of Canton through providing funding for local food pantries, clothing closets and outreach ministries through Action Church in Canton.

Jay Saro, who works with his sister, Elena Lamb, who owns the store, said he saw lots of people in the store Wednesday to purchase things, but hadn’t received any donations, yet.

“We will take anything, as long as it’s not ragged-out,” Saro said. “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure, as the saying goes.”

Saro said his brother-in-law, Gary Lamb, preaches at Action Church to people who are “down and out” and “on tough times.”

“Here our goal is to reach out to folks, lift them up, give them support and get them going,” Saro said.

All donations to the nonprofit are 100 percent tax deductible, with new stock coming in daily and several specials.

Located at 920 Waleska Road, the store is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Other donation centers in the community include Goodwill in Holly Springs, Canton, Hickory Flat and Woodstock. The sales of Goodwill donations go toward funding job training programs, employment placement services and other community-based programs for people who have disabilities, lack education or job experience, or face employment challenges.

Additionally, Habitat ReStore in Canton accepts new and slightly used donations throughout the year. All donations are tax-deductible and pickups can be scheduled by calling (770) 345-1024.

The store is located at 551B Marietta Road in Canton, with proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity-North Central Georgia to help eliminate poverty housing.
