MARIETTA — Christmas Day could be an ugly one for Cobb and the Atlanta area.

According to forecasters with both the National Weather Service and The Weather Channel, a front from the west could bring damaging winds, including 60-mile-per-hour winds, periods of heavy rains and the possibility of tornadoes.

Vaughn Smith with the National Weather Service out of Peachtree City said the storm system is going to be moving into the area today.

The strongest storms in the front, which is being pushed through Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia, should come into the Atlanta area tonight but he expects it to clear out on Wednesday.

He encourages those in the area to stay tuned to the local weather forecast and check batteries on weather radios.

“If your power goes out, it’ll be the only way to get warnings,” he said.

Dale Eck, the director of the global forecast center with The Weather Channel based in south Cobb, said the “highest” threat for a tornado could be closer to the Gulf Coast but it may exist as far north as the metro Atlanta area.

Smith also said temperatures on Tuesday should stay around 59 or 60 degrees with the overnight lows around the 50s and, as the storm series clears out on Wednesday, the lows could drop into the 30s.

“We may see a little bit of snow on the backside of this storm but mostly confined to the north Georgia mountains,” Smith said. “The Cobb County area may see a flurry or two, but nothing that will stick to the ground.”
