AUSTELL — When Nikira Goings is shooting well, Osborne can be pretty confident that it will win.

Goings scored 32 points to lead the Lady Cardinals, and her contributions on offense played a major role in helping them take a double-digit lead at the half before winning 71-44 on Saturday at South Cobb, the lone girls game of the John Kelly Memorial Classic.

Goings scored 26 of her points in the first half, going 6-for-7 inside the paint and 4-for-6 from beyond the 3-point line.

“She’s been shooting very well,” Osborne coach Melanie Samuel said of Goings. “She has one of the nicest shots you’ll ever see from a high school student. She has nice form and is a pure shooter.”

Osborne’s full-court pressure defense also set the tone in the first half. The Lady Cardinals (12-1) forced 13 turnovers in the first quarter alone and totaled 31 for the game.

South Cobb (3-5) had just one look at the basket in the first 2 minutes of the game, and that was a successful 3-pointer by Jameisha Walker to start the game. Afterwards, Osborne scored 13 unanswered points.

South Cobb called timeout at the 5:41 mark following Zutorya Cook’s layup off a steal, but it didn’t help.

Following the timeout, Goings sank the first of her six total 3-pointers of the game. Cook then added another layup before South Cobb finally stopped the bleeding with an Andrea Duncan layup.

South Cobb cut its deficit to six points at 13-7 before Osborne went on another spurt. Goings made consecutive layups off turnovers and added another 3-pointer with 1:11 left to play to up the lead to 21-10.

The Lady Eagles nearly bounced back after falling behind, with Chyna Richards hitting a layup early in the second quarter to cut the Osborne lead to 25-21.

But then Goings got hot once again, and Osborne’s lead was back to double digits roughly a minute later.

Still, South Cobb was within striking range at the break, only trailing by 13 points. And when the Lady Eagles started keeping Goings in check in the second half, Cook started hitting her shots. She finished with 21 points, with 15 in the second half and 11 in the third quarter.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Cook gave Osborne a 21-point lead. Her 3s also helped launch a 12-0 run to give the Lady Cardinals a comfortable 60-33 lead to end the third quarter.

Diera Carrie led South Cobb with 11 points and, Walker finished with seven.
