AUSTELL — A Cobb County School District bus driver was arrested on felony child molestation charges this week.

Freddie Lee Bates, 41, of Austell, was arrested Tuesday by Cobb County Police on charges of felony rape, incest, aggravated sexual battery, two counts of aggravated child molestation and child molestation. He remains in the Cobb County Jail without bond.

According to the warrant, Bates is accused of committing the crimes at residences in Marietta and Kennesaw between Aug. 10, 2006, and Aug. 10, 2009.

The victim, who is identified only as a child under 16 living in his home, told police that Bates had sex with her and committed “acts of sodomy.”

Sgt. Dana Pierce with Cobb Police said the case was a “sensitive matter” and the investigation is ongoing, therefore he could not comment further.

Cobb Schools spokesman Jay Dillon said Bates has been a bus driver with the district since 2011. He would not say what route Bates drove but said the charges do not involve his job or students.

It is unclear if Bates has been fired from the district.

What happened to innocent till proven guilty? Unfortunately he is already guilty in the public eye when in reality accusations are made by disgruntled friends family and coworkers quite often that are proven false. I believe everyone should hold their opinions and mean remarks till the truth comes out which it will!

I a degree

You are saying that if your child rode his bus you would continue to allow him to drive them every day until after a trial?

I don't agree that this is not the business of parents just because the current allegations don't involve students. He is my children's bus driver and I am VERY concerned especially since this states he has yet to be fired.

While I don't blame CCSD because he had no prior issues it is their responsibility to notify and assure parents of this so we can make informed decisions regarding our children's safety AND to protect our children from these predators.

We really can't trust people most especially those we don't know or shall we call it, stranger. We may not judge people we don't know, but we really have to be extra careful when it comes to the safety of our family. So as a mother, I thought of searching for a safety protection for my whole family. Thanks to my friend who introduce me this mobile-based application. This application can be great help when you're in danger situation, it is called the help button. The use of this help button is to notify trusted friends and family or if really needed gets to the nearest 911. It's very reliable when it comes to real emergency, they can give an immediate response so this application can save lives. If you want your family to be protected, you should also try this apps too. This is about society and the downfall of it. The transportation department can only go by the person's records and interviews and experience. If a person has never committed a crime or have a record, nobody knows what they are doing behind closed doors. People can be deceived these days by double-minded people. I knew the FC that was arrested personally, and would have NEVER believed he would do such a thing. It was very shocking. Every bus driver I know is shocked and very upset about this happening in our department. Most of us hold a high standard and try to treat these children as precious cargo.

This makes two CCSD Transportation employees who have been arrested for sex crimes involving children in just the past week or so:

What the heck is going on in Transportation? And, how are these alleged perverts slipping through the HR screening process?
