CANTON — After a mix-up between the city of Canton and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, a new exercise area in Boling Park is on its way to being completed.

The city of Canton leases Boling Park from the Corps of Engineers and is required to notify the Corps before making physical changes to the property.

“Because the new exercise equipment is simply replacing old, dilapidated equipment, our public works department did not realize that authorization was necessary simply for the replacement of existing equipment,” Canton City Manager Scott Wood said.

After beginning installation of the equipment at the end of September, the Corps asked the city to suspend installation until the agency could review and approve the work, Wood said.

“It was not a significant event. It was just an oversight,” Corps spokesman Pat Robbins said. The city’s plans were approved on Tuesday with no changes, he added.

The metal exercise equipment, located on a concrete pad at the park’s walking track, was bought by the city at the end of September. It will replace the wooden exercise equipment previously installed at the park.

Wood said he hopes the equipment will be useable within a few weeks, but other public works projects could slow down the installation process.

“Unfortunately, Corps approval comes during two abbreviated weeks — Veterans Day this week and the Thanksgiving holidays next week — and also during the limited period each year when the same crews are obligated to put up Christmas lights throughout the city,” the city manager said.
