MARIETTA — The new roundabout built over the summer near the Mountain View Aquatic Center Complex at Holly Springs and Davis roads is a success, county officials said.
“It is alleviating traffic in the mornings and afternoons, as opposed to the four-way stop that was there,” said Commissioner JoAnn Birrell, who represents northwest Cobb. “It’s a great improvement for that area. All I’ve gotten is positive feedback. Everybody loves it. Even the ones that weren’t so sure or didn’t want it to begin with, they love it now.”
The county paid C.W. Matthews Construction Company $403,233 to remove the previous four-way stop and built the roundabout at the intersection, which is the county’s third roundabout.
“All during the day, it would back up at all four corners at the four-way stop,” said Daniel McDuff, the county’s deputy transportation director. “When we built that roundabout, all that delay just disappeared overnight.”
Roundabouts require very little maintenance, McDuff said.
“If we put up a traffic signal, you’d have $150,000 of traffic signal equipment, and then you’re annual maintenance, you’d be fixing bulbs and computer problems and replacing components. None of that there,” he said.
The county is eying several other locations for potential roundabouts, including John Ward Road at Cheatham Hill Road, he said.
On Tuesday, McDuff gave the Board of Commissioners a quarterly update on SPLOST projects that have been completed, including:
- Paying Sunbelt Structures, Inc. $811,000 to replace an aging culvert on Woodland Brook Drive in Vinings a half mile from Paces Ferry Road.
- Paying Baldwin Paving Company $370,595 for improvements at the entrance of Sope Creek Elementary School on Paper Mill Road, such as building a right-turn lane and extending the left turn lane.
- Paying Chatfield Contracting, Inc $130,056 for emergency repairs to a partially collapsed section of corrugated metal pipe under Clubland Drive in the Indian Hills subdivision and repairing the adjacent residential driveway.
- Paying D&H Construction Company $25,144 for drainage improvements at Twin Branches Circle.
McDuff said the county has agreed to 10 contracts valued at $29.6 million for repaving 156 miles of roadway in unincorporated Cobb since October 2011.

Some low cost, low maintenance landscaping that doesn't impact site distance or safety would be nice.
People are lucky that there are no roundabouts with 3 or 4 lines in the roundabouts like in Europe.
The raised portion of bricks is very hard to see at night. This is a great boon for tire shops.
