Charlie Maison was a monster on special teams blocking two punts which both led to short-yardage scoring drives for Allatoona.
“Charlie is a kid that just has a knack for blocking punts. It’s not something that you can coach,” Allatoona coach Gary Varner said.
Varner was looking for the Buccaneers defense to show some improvement after allowing big plays in their last game against South Paulding. The Allatoona defense showed up by allowing New Manchester only 64 total yards on their way to a 21-7 halftime lead.
“I really challenged my guys in practice this week to improve on the little things, and they did that in the first half,” Varner said.
The Buccaneers took advantage of good field position in the first half scoring on drives of 30 and 20 yards allowed by Maison’s first block and a fumble recovery deep in Jaguars’ territory. T.J. Herron capped both drives with scoring runs, and accumulated 99 yards on 17 carries for three touchdowns in the game.
Allatoona’s special teams struck again just before halftime when Austin Daniel fielded a short punt and ran it in for a 20 yard scoring return.
The second half started out much the same, as Maison blocked his second punt of the night setting the Buccaneers up at the Jaguar 30 yard line for their first possession of the second half. Tommy Davis ran a reverse from 10 yards out five plays later to give Allatoona a 28-7 lead, and, after another forced three and out, the Buccaneers reeled off a seven-play 60-yard drive to put the lead at 34-7.
“We look at Allatoona as a team we would like to be like,” New Manchester coach Rob Ceveand said. “We’re where they were a couple of years ago and we just hope to be as good as they are in a couple of years.”
The Jaguars answered on their ensuing drive when Tre Wilson found Davin Dobbs along the sideline for a beautiful over the shoulder connection for a 50 yard touchdown. However, Josh Beautista capped the Buccaneer evening with a 33 yard run to the Jaguar 32 yard line followed by a 32 yard reception out of the back field for the final score of the game.
