SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Backyard chickens, bees and other creatures could soon be legal residents in Chatham County near Georgia's coast.

The Savannah Morning News reports that the Chatham County-Savannah Metropolitan Planning Commission this week approved a zoning ordinance amendment regarding the animals. It would allow homeowners in unincorporated parts of the county to keep a limited number of chickens, bees and other livestock on their property regardless of zoning classification.

The change now goes before the Chatham County Commission for possible approval at its next meeting on Sept. 7.

The Morning News reports that if the ordinance is approved, chickens like those kept by celebrity chef Paula Deen of Wilmington Island will be legal residents.

Please be reasonable. I live in a small community that has an association, but in the last years we have become 60% rental, 40% ownership. We pay out the wazoo to make the owners halfway live up to code on the 60% rental property. Now you are asking us to be sure the chicken coop is maintained? I don't think so. You want chickens--buy acreage.

If your association bans chickens, they would still be banned if the county changes the ordinance. Two large dogs produce more waste than ten chickens~ Shall we ban dogs so you don't have to worry about who is cleaning up after them?

From what I know from my chicken loving friends, that article is incorrect- it only applies to bees & chickens.

We are working hard to change the ordinance in Cobb County than bans chickens on less than two acres. Check out the Backyard Chickens Alliance at backyardchix.org. We already have over 1,500 signatures on paper petitions, and have just started an online version as well! Be sure to let your county commissioners know how you feel as well~

Wish you (they) had reported WHAT "and other animals" means. Rabbits? Miniature goats? Sheep? I also wish Cobb County would enact such an ordinance!
