With those innocuous words, Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy last week set off a firestorm of invective in his direction from those on the left who never miss an opportunity to bash and trash traditional Christianity — especially if they can push the Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transgender agenda in the process.
Never mind that Cathy’s outlook should come as no surprise to anyone remotely familiar with his family’s Atlanta-based restaurant chain, which foregoes millions of dollars in potential revenues each week by choosing to close on Sundays. Cathy and his father, chain founder Truett Cathy, have never for a moment tried to closet their conservative beliefs.
You’ll note that Dan Cathy said nothing about planning to treat LGBT customers any differently than other customers. Yet his implied criticism of the push for gay marriage was sufficient to make him and his chain a sudden pariah to many liberals.
As noted elsewhere on these pages, big-city mayors suddenly indicated that businesses that were not overtly LGBT-friendly were not welcome in their cities.
Among the most critical was Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, even though, as columnist Cal Thomas notes nearby, Emanuel has cozied up to openly anti-Semitic demagogue Louis Farrakhan, who is notoriously anti-gay. But then, Farrakhan is not a conservative Christian, so he’s not a legitimate target for those on the left.
Moreover, let’s not forget that Rahm was chief of staff for President Obama until earlier this year — who at the time held the same position on gay marriage as Cathy. So would Obama have been allowed to open an eatery in Chicago had his position not “evolved” earlier this year?
It all goes to prove there’s nobody more intolerant these days than some liberals.
All Dan Cathy did was have the courage to say to a reporter what the majority of Americans still believe: that marriage was meant to be between a man and a woman. In return he has been scalded by “progressives,” whose goal is to browbeat and intimidate anyone with differing views into acquiescing with their supposedly enlightened worldview. And they are egged on by President Obama, whose administration has bludgeoned Catholics for failing to embrace his new requirement that even faith-based institutions must provide contraceptive coverage in their employee health-care plans.
Fox News commentator Mike Huckabee is urging people to eat at Chick-fil-A today to show support for Cathy and for free speech.
To that we say “Eat More Chicken.”

I hope Truitt Cathy his father, who worked all those years to build this business, has enough class to come forward and apologize for the ignorance of his son.
Regardless of whether their views on certain issues are right or wrong they shouldn't use their "bully pulpit" to broadcast or try to enforce them.
It is just WRONG!!
Vote NO on TSPLOST!!!
Oh I forgot!! We already squashed that bug!!!
Yours is probably the most absurd (amongst a world-class set of) inputs to this topic.
I could be wrong. I've been wrong before; just ask the wife. But methinks Bush was not necessarily against stem cell research, but against the FUNDING of such with tax payer money. That's a different ball of wax than the current CFA saga.
What is getting my panties in a wad is Rahm Emanuel, et al, using their position as mayor to rail against, and attempting to damage, CFA and the Cathy family - private citizens and a private business.
Meanwhile back at the ranch, don't you find it odd that Rahm Emanuel was, at the same time, welcoming Louis Farrakhan who has a history of anti-semitic remarks? Granted, Farrakhan and his folks were there in an attempt to stop the violence currently taking place in Chicago's streets - a worthy cause.
But building a business that will employ folks, pay taxes, etc. is a worthy cause, also. I might add, CFA is a business that serves healthy stuff! Don't get me wrong, I do have my Big Mac attacks now and then, but a good ol' chicky sammich has fewer calories and less fat, I believe. Michelle and Bloomberg should be supporting CFA! ;) Can you get 32oz drinks there?
So, to summarize, Bush's goal was to use policy - tax policy - to push his agenda. Rahm Emanuel, et al, are using their clout as mayors against private citizens to push their agenda. That is thuggery, no?
Please help us reconcile this seemingly hypocritical conundrum.
If they had prefaced their remarks with the statement that these were their personal opinions then no problem.
That is, in fact, what George Bush did.
These characters are taking to the podium and presumedly speaking for their cities and all of their citizens.
When they take the stage as elected mayors of those cities they are held to a higher standard of accountability.
Are you trying tell me that they have the right to insinuate that all of their citizens hold the same viewpoint.
Because that is exactly what they did.
They are mayors not dictators, although with some of these guys you wouldn't know it.
Get a grip and come back from the uber liberal fantasy universe in which you are dwelling.
This was in fact the first VETO of Bush's presidency....he vetoed a bill passed by both houses of Congress with bi-partisan support (and supported by the vast majority of the public) because he was of the personal opinion that there was a moral problem with the use of embryonic stem cells for research into cures for a host of afflictions.
So, you were totally OK with him turning opinion into policy but not OK with these other elected officials doing the same? This is the same blind spot all the right wingers have on this free speech topic.....remember your boycotting of the Dixie Chicks after they dared to speak freely? No free speech allowed for them...but Chicken Boy gets all the intolerant free speech he can possibly sneak around his mouthful of over-processed fried chicken ?
The issue is the actions of the mayors. If said mayors don't support the Cathy's beliefs, then they shouldn't buy their products, and leave it at that.
Unfortunately, that is not the progressive way. Instead, they (the mayors) must vilify an entire corporation that provides jobs, pays taxes and contributes to charities. But it's really worse. The mayors, IN THEIR CAPACITY AS MAYORS, vilified Chick-fil-A.
It appears you and I agree :)
Since you probably won't be patronizing CFA, perhaps you and I could meet at your favorite tavern and raise a glass in support of the First Amendment!
Cheers!
So mjtailorsmom, do you ask for forgiveness when you eat pork or food from the sea without scales?
How many non-white franchise owners are there?
How many franchise owners are there NOT affiliated with a church?
This is the tip of the iceburg folks. The Cathy's have been allowed to be politely discriminatory for years. Check it out....they are not singling out the gays.
I have a great deal of respect for Chick-Fil-A and the way they run their business, but this was a self inflicted wound to their business they did not need to take. As the column notes, anyone familiar with the company knows where they stand on these issues. I would suspect that the elder Cathy would not have made this same comment.
The behavior of several US mayors to this has been absurd, banning restaurants based on their political views is a childish idea.
I would be interested in knowing how exactly Obama has bludgeoned Catholics, to be honest it has been Obama that has been the target of attacks by Catholics due to the fact that some are no longer allowed to impose their religious views on their employees via their health care options.
Someone that's never bought breakfast before brought in a whole bag of 'em for us today.
I don't think the gay community would ever donate more than $5 million to an organization that tried to take away your rights and criminalize your lifestyle like CFA does to them. That's the difference here that you obviously are not understanding.
And calling Cathy a bigot is not name calling, it's what he is. Feel free to look the word up in the dictionary.
"We're all married to our first wives."
I am a fairly conservative Christian, but the first thing I learned as a child was that God loves, God forgives and ONLY God judges. While I agree Mr. Cathy has a right to do whatever he likes with his money, I think when he does it under the umbrella of his business he invites trouble. He is definitely within his rights to have an agenda, just as I am within my rights to no longer do business with him.
