A history lesson for Kevin Foley

DEAR EDITOR:

Kevin Foley’s July 20 column had an interesting headline, “The Disappearing W.” It’s hard to say President George W. Bush is gone when Obama and other liberals have consistently brought up #43 over the past dismal 3½ years to cast blame. Foley does this while claiming Clinton left office with a surplus and then points out that Bush left office with a debt.

But a little lesson for you, Mr. Foley. The spending bills come out of the House of Representatives. During the Clinton surplus it was a conservative House that held Clinton’s feet to the fire. Please recall it was Nancy Pelosi and the liberal members who ran the House during Bush’s terms.

I only wish President Bush used the power of Veto more.

Bob Ledna

Mr. Ledna, thank you for your polite and thoughtful comments. This is the way we can restore civility to the public discourse.

The point of my column was to demonstrate that Bush is a major liability for the Romney campaign. W can't show his face because voters with short memories will quickly recall his disastrous presidency.

What's stunning is that Romney's plan for the country is to bring back the identical Bush policies that destroyed the economy.

LOL! I wish GWB had done a lot differently too Bob so, you're in good company.

If only he had more power to stop all those wiley democrats... oh well. Maybe one day we'll have a king again and you can rest easy.

When will people get off their behinds and take a look at what the "surplus" really was and how it was achieved by Clinton. Until you can hold an educated and informed discussion on the what is the difference between public debt and intra-governmental holdings (and the defintions of each) and the difference between "on-budget' and "off-bduget" spending, please do not spout off the myth that Clinton left us with a surplus. He didnt.

Sorry Bob, American history did not begin Jan. 20, 2009. President Obama took office in the worst financial crisis since the great depression, banks failing, wall street collapse, two wars, and thousands of unemployed. I don't blame you for trying to pass the buck but the President does have the power of the veto and President Truman said "The Buck Stops Here". Bush vetoed only 12 bills. Only one Presidential veto occured before Democrats took control of Congress in Jan 2007. This is the fewest Presidential vetoes of any modern President. The house over rode his vetoes on Food Conservation and Energy, and Medicare improvements for Patients and Prividers. The vetoes sustained were for Stem Cell Research, Veterans care, Katrina relief, U.S. Troop Readiness, Childrens Health Insurance Programs and appropriations for Labor, Health & Human Services.

So Bob, by your reasoning, the current "mess" we are in now fiscally is a result of the Republican led House of Representatives..correct?..After all, the spending bills come from them.

@Devlin Adams

Maby not, with the death of Sen Ted Kennedy and the delay in seating Sen Al Franken it was more like one year, but one year should be more than enough time to clean up eight years of Republican incompetence.

Good work, Bob. Unfortunately, attempting to educate Foley, on any subject, is a futile effort.

He sees himself as the final authority on every subject.

If you don't believe it, just witness how quickly he moves to try to demean and insult those who openly disagree with him.

I think it's funny that he's trying to teach a history lesson yet says that Pelosi controlled the House during Bush's two terms.
