IMAGE: County immigration code shouldn’t take 7 months

Seven weeks ago Cobb County became the first local government in Georgia and one of only 10 nationally to join the federal immigration enforcement program IMAGE to help ensure that all the county’s employees are legally eligible to work.

At the time Chairman Tim Lee said the agreement with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency would aid in preventing possible terrorist attacks and protect employees against discrimination based on citizenship or national origin. The new program includes initial audits and inspection of the county’s employment records among other requirements aimed at ferreting out illegal immigrants.

“The message, if there is one, is that Cobb County takes its responsibility very seriously to make sure that everything possibly that could be done is being done to make sure the laws are being followed in our county and to make sure there’s an opportunity for equal employment for those that deserve it,” Lee said.

Special Agent Brock Nicholson of the ICE Atlanta office praised Cobb for its forward thinking, saying he was proud of the partnership with Cobb, starting with the 287(g) program signed with the sheriff’s department in 2007, one of only four such agreements in Georgia. This system, which gives local governments access to the ICE database, has resulted in thousands of Cobb inmates being identified as illegal immigrants in the past five years.

County Commissioner Bob Ott, who had been pushing for Cobb to join the program, said it wasn’t about deporting people. He said: “It’s all about jobs for the folks in Georgia and Cobb County. It really comes down to just making sure that the limited number of jobs that are out there are going to the people that are entitled to have them.”

Both Lee and Ott talked as if there was some urgency to the matter back in May.

Now the commission must move to the next level: requiring all businesses and contractors doing work for the county to also be IMAGE-certified. Optimally, this should be done without delay. However, Lee and Ott said last week the writing of a proposed code amendment won’t be completed until next January. Lee cautioned, “you have to be careful to follow the process and procedures that are in place.” Ott said it was a matter of “basically writing a law. You can’t just rush through something.” And he reiterated his commitment to “protecting jobs for the people here legally, but as we take the next step, we have to look at the legal ramifications.”

Granted, it takes time to look at the legal ramifications. But seven months? Perhaps the commission needs to retain outside expert legal counsel to draft a new code section and get this matter wrapped up in a timely fashion, say, a couple of weeks, possibly before the July 31 primary — not that it has any bearing on this matter. But certainly the job could be done in the next three months before Nov. 6.

Seven months would be after the November election, So that gives the businesse, who utilize the cheaper labor, a little more time to build up their coffers in the more favorable summer and fall weather. And of course the Chamber of C would promote that.

Conservative politicans are severely conflicted when it comes to immigration. On the one hand they must pander to the far right fringe (see posts below for a flavor) and on the other they must cater to business owners hiring undocumented workers who are generally hard working, reliable, honest, and require less pay and no benefits.

The reasonable solution is reform like that proposed by former President Bush and supported by the current president. The key word there is reasonable and conservatives hate reason.

Nice off topic post Foley, and we all know when the liberal left uses the word "reasonable," that always means we all must agree with your fringe leftist viewpoint. Illegal aliens equal more votes for Democrats, just another selfish way Democrats continue to play the race card and rip America apart, all for more votes to keep big government Democrats in power.

They are not dragging their feet- all new Code proposals are looked at in January, and January only~ That is the way that the Code is written. You can spin it any way that you want, that is how it is. Ask Robert Hosack~

They can change code anytime - but nice try. The BOC requires use of E-bverify before a bid is accepted. This is an easy add-on. Tim.

You constantly complain of the County spending too much money and having to raise taxes, but here you go again saying the County should hire expensive outside attorneys to speed up the process. How many police or firemen do you want the County to fire to hire an outside attorney? You can't have it both ways.

They are dragging their feet partly because they don't want to get sued and partly because some big political donators can't comply with this new law without laying off most of their workforce. Take a good hard look next time you drive by a road work crew.

State bills are written in much less time and the BOC has already had more than a year. Tim Lee, weak argument and not fooling us.

Leave the Mexican immigrants alone - you are directly your ire towards the Mexican illegals when it was students on visas who blew up the towers. Focus on those immigrants - those from Muslim countries.

As for the Mexicans, you employers enjoy your cheap labor so stop complaining about them being in the country. You keep them here with your jobs as gardeners, landscapers, labors, chicken plant workers, etc. You don't hire citizens because you don't want to pay fair wages and unemployment, social security and medicare taxes. You scam the system and then complain that illegals are here with their kids and families. Hypocrites.

I suspect local pushback from the Cobb Chamber of Commerce who want to keep their cheap illegal immigrant labor during an election year.
Chamber is good.
