NORTHEAST COBB — Lisa Hanson is one of two newcomers challenging incumbent school board member David Banks to represent the northeast Cobb post 5.

Hanson, Banks and Stephanie Henry are vying for the seat in the July 31 GOP primary. No Democrats have entered the race, so whoever wins the primary will likely be the one taking office in January.

Hanson lives in Post 5, though her home has a Roswell mailing address. Pope and Lassiter high schools are in Post 5.

Hanson, 50, said her goals include excellence in the classroom, fiscal conservatism and responsible leadership.

“I intend to bring ethical leadership to the board of education,” she said. “I will demand complete transparency and will not trade votes, support questionable education programs, or base my decisions on politics.”

The district’s budget is a priority for her. The district had to cut $63 million in expenses from its Fiscal Year 2013 budget.

“First, we must get control of our spending,” she said. “For example, spending $400,000 on a trip to Florida for professional development appears to be ill conceived.”

She would have rather spent that money on technology and conducted the training via video conference, she said.

She also does not favor bringing Teach For America staff to Cobb — and wonders why Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa is spending time on fund-raising to cover TFA expenses, rather than more important issues.

Hanson will vote against the state’s proposed constitutional amendment on charter schools on Nov. 6. She believes the proposal would make local control of schools meaningless.

“Parents have the fundamental right to be directly involved in their children’s education. I also strongly question as to how the state will fund additional charter schools while they currently cannot fully fund our public schools,” she said.

Hanson, a mother of two, said she is enjoying campaigning.

“I’m very encouraged by the people that I’ve talked to who are really aware of the issues,” she said. … “What I’m hearing is that people are really disenfranchised with some of the things that are going on.”

She’s promoting her campaign online through a website and a Facebook fan page, and she has posted signs throughout northeast Cobb.

“I’ve been out there meeting with people, listening to people,” she said.

Hanson’s June 30 campaign finance report shows that she’s raised $4,150, $500 of which was in loans, and has about $1,000 on hand.

“My goals and priorities have been getting the message out, talking to people … not the fundraising necessarily, that will come later,” she said.

When I inquired with Ms. Hanson about which calendar she supported she deftly dodged the question. If I had to choose between her and Banks I would take her in a heartbeat but for the fact I didn't get a straight answer on a simple issue gives me pause.

I could not agree with you more. Mr. Banks comments that he called the schools in which "his opponent " children went to school is disturbing. Mr banks when not hurling insults at fellow board members is asleep. Wake up post 5, it is not about the amount of signs someone puts up or takes down.

I only wish more people would pay as much attention with the expenses, budget, transparency and overall board functions as they do with the calendar. Mr. Banks' recent Grapevine, vol. 90, was so far out of line when you uses his position to inquire about a candidate and her family as to their school activity involvement. What school official is willing to discuss a student's activities to support his campaign. If you take the time and watch the board meetings on TV or the internet, it is clear Mr. Banks does not provide strong leadership or value for his voters. Half the time he is not listening only to bring up a subject that has already been discussed. I just glad we have someone else running against Mr. Banks and I gladly support Lisa Hanson. Too bad many of her campaign signs keep disappearing and I'm sure she's not the one taking them down.

I would like to know why Banks is the only School Board Member who feels he has to express his anger to complain in the media or for that matter, why his newletter is even considered new? Regarding Hanson's missing signs, I heard (not personally witnessed) that an elderly person in a black pick-up truck was seen removing signs. I think it is pretty low class to do that. However, If you or anyone wants a yard sign, please contact Ms Hanson via her website, www.electLisaHanson.com or facebook.com/Lisa-Hanson.

While David Banks's style seems to go against the grain of other Board members, remember that he is doing what his constituents want. He ran on a September start date, then followed (and continues) to try to get the balanced calendar that most in his area stated they wanted (look at the survey results). Some may argue with me, but he has been conservative, and working for us. He may seem rogue, at times, but with the other members of the Board playing games as they do, isn't that what we need?

There is a significant difference between being 'rogue' and irresponsible. I personally, object to his support of TFA (trying to replace our local teachers with instructors who have gone through a 6 week crash course). I also believe that governance means realizing you do not win every battle and that it is better to move forward, hoping for a better day.

To pander to the teachers by suggesting that the money in reserves be brought down to almost zero, simply puts the property owners at risk of higher taxes - if there is a fiscal bump in the road. It should be noted that a tax increase would not impact him, since he has had the senior school tax exemption for over 13 years. It is akin to playing poker with money that is not your own - it is fairly easy to make huge gambles.

I really do not care which calendar is used, we simply need wise leadership.

Not sure how anyone can honestly claim that Mr. Banks is really a responsible conservative.

Banks a conservative?! That's laughable. This is the guy who wanted to dip into the reserves to make up for the budget deficit! This has to be the dumbest position he took while in office. Then he wanted to give the teachers raises when the district was running a shortfall. Conservative you say? Really? You need to pay more attention. He does not represent this post 5 voter and he will not get my vote in the up coming election.
