MARIETTA – The Marietta Daily Journal received 22 awards in this year’s Georgia Press Association recognitions, including eight first place wins and a second overall for “General Excellence” in its division this year.

The Journal took home first place wins in Photo of the Year by Photographer Jon-Michael Sullivan, Photo Essay by Photo Chief Laura Moon, Sports Section or Pages, Feature Photograph by Sullivan, the Otis A. Brumby Trophy and Serious Column by Editorial Page Editor Joe Kirby, Headline Writing, Lifestyle Coverage and Newspaper Website.

The newspaper earned second place awards in Business Coverage by Staff Writer Katy Ruth Camp, the Joe Parham Trophy and Humorous Column by Columnist Dick Yarbrough, the J.C. Williams Trophy and Editorial Page, the W. Trox Bankston Trophy and Local News Coverage, News Photograph by Moon, Sports Feature Photograph by Sullivan, Feature Photograph by Sullivan and Photo Illustration by Sullivan.

The third place recipients were for Special Issues for Factbook 2011, Sports Photograph by Photographer Lindsay Fendt, Investigative Reporting by News Editor Kim Isaza for her coverage of the expenses through community improvement districts and Page One.

Whenever I want the facts and unbiased truth regarding what's going on around here...I look to the MDJ to provide them and, when I want a goiod dose of fiction...I look to our city government to provide it. So, ike our local pseudo city manager is so fond of saying: "It's a win-win situation."

Congratulations MDJ and all the individual award winners who were recognized. I can always count on my local newspaper to keep me informed of local and state news. I love my home town newspaper.

I like this paper, have subscribed for years but the amount of AP news is depressing. It is very slanted and a lot of times, more opinion than real news. Wish this could be changed.
