McEachern teacher accused of sexual assault

POWDER SPRINGS — A McEachern High School coach is accused of having a sexual relationship with a student, Cobb Police said. Terence Tarpley, 33, an assistant track coach, allegedly had sex with an adult student off-campus earlier this year, police said.

The alleged encounter occurred in January but was not reported to the week, Cobb Police spokesman Mike Bowman said. The

school reported the allegations to authorities immediately, Bowman said. Tarpley is charged with sexual assault, a felony. He was being held at the Cobb County Jail. His bail is set at $5,000. Police are asking anyone who feels they have been victimized by Tarpley to call (770) 499-3945.

What took so long for the incident to be reported. It happened in January but just now being reported.

This is not surprising to me that Tarplay is accused of being a pedophile. Can't wait to see if there are other instances reported now. Aside from not doing his job, he hangs out with all the females....and even makes sexual comments to the teachers. I hope and pray that he is never allowed onto another school campus again...as a coach and especially as a teacher, who is supposed to be setting an example and protecting our children.

If the teacher had sex with a student, this is illegal as no teacher is to have sexual relations with a student whether that student is an adult or a minor under new Georgia law.

All CCSD educators and administrators are annually reviewed on Ethics. These laws are non-negotiables. It does not matter if the young lady was 19 or 20, the law is clear and no teacher is to have sexual relations with students. What is happening with our society and our educators? We know better. Male and female teachers who engage with students on a sexual level are void of something in their lives and they need to self-evaluate and have the students' best interest at all times.

I realize the article states she was an "adult student". What I mean is the law or regulations applicable to teachers may assume that the teacher/coach is in a position of authority and therefore is taking advantage of the student, regardless of whether there was consent.

You're joking, right?! This is an example of you're an idiot! She is a high school student, by GA law a high school student is not an adult, regardless of age. Every teacher is made well aware of this situation and is told straight forward to not cross it or you will be fired, plain and simple.

The student may not have been an adult when the assault occurred. Also GA laws have changed whereas educators are not allowed to have sexual relations with students (i.e. Before new law, if student was 16, the student by law could have been considered consenting adult, but under new GA law if student has sexual relations with an educator, this is illegal.). Also, statue of limitations for abuse can go well beyond the original date of abuse--even if person/student is now adult, he/she can report the abuse which occurred while they were a minor.

I agree--adult, off campus, etc. But was she still a student? That might mean something.

Areyouanidiot? You can give an affirmative answer. No Georgia law makes a person over 18 years of old, a minor. And telling a teacher, if you have a sexual relationship with a student, even if the student is an adult, you will be fired, is not the same as the state government arresting the teacher and charging the teacher with a felony. This is just another example of Republican lawmakers who claim they want smaller government, trying to regulate adult's personal relationships. Are we going to start arresting college instructors for having sex with their students? The case should never have been brought. The remedy, if any, is to fire the teacher before breaking their rules of employment. Do you want to pay to keep this teacher in a Georgia prison for the next ten years at a cost of over a MILLION DOLLARS. The problem with student teacher relationships is a conflict of interest one, i.e., and it's usually the student who is the one chasing the teacher, not the other way around.
