OPELIKA. Ala. (AP) _ The suspect in the Alabama shooting deaths of three people during a party near Auburn University is scheduled to appear in court for the first time.

Desmonte Leonard is scheduled to go before a judge Thursday morning in Opelika. He faces three counts of capital murder in the shooting deaths Saturday night of Ladarious Phillips, Demario Pitts and Ed Christian.

Christian and Phillips were former players with Auburn University’s powerhouse football team. Three other people were injured.

Leonard turned himself in Tuesday after a three-day manhunt.

The hearing Thursday is expected to be brief, with a judge explaining the charges against him. Because he is charged with capital murder, bond is not expected to be set.
