MARIETTA — Kell High School Principal Trudie Donovan retired abruptly Friday after leading the school for the last six years.

Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa would not release the details that led to Donovan’s decision to retire after 34 years with the district but said she “was recently involved in a situation involving the reporting of a student matter.”

“Because it is a personnel issue, I cannot comment further,” he said via email Wednesday. “Since she is eligible, Ms. Donovan elected to go ahead and retire at this time allowing us ample time to find a replacement for the start of the 2012-2013 school year. We look forward to a smooth transition and a continuation of all the things that make Kell High School such an outstanding learning environment.”

He refused to say whether Donovan would have been fired had she not retired.

Donovan was named Kell’s principal in 2006 after serving as an associate principal at Harrison High for four years. She started in the Cobb County School District in 1978 as a teacher at Walton High, where she stayed until 2000.

She also served as an administrative assistant and assistant principal at South Cobb High in her 30-plus years with the district.

Carole Kell, the widow of coach Corky Kell, whom the school is named after, said she is a good friend of Donovan’s and that it will be tough to replace someone as loved by the students, faculty and community as she is.

“The Kell community is losing a truly devoted person who is an excellent administrator. I’m very, very sorry to see her go, but I certainly support her decision to retire at this time,” she said. “The major thing about Trudie, other than her enthusiasm, is the fact that she believed in athletics and academics equally and made a difference in both of those areas and was a friend to every student at that school.”

School board member Kathleen Angelucci, who represents Kell, and the school’s Robotics Team captain, Ed Barker, echoed Kell’s comments about her student commitment.

“I had a good working and personal relationship with her, as a parent and board member, and I have always felt that students were everything to her,” Angelucci said. Both of her daughters attended Kell while Donovan was principal.

Barker said Donovan has been a “great supporter” of his students as well.

“She always put the students first and tried to run a tight ship and make sure everything was fantastic for everybody,” he said.

For two decades now sex, race and ethnicity have dominated in

the hiring of school administrators. Though fairness was its

original intent, this policy has not served Cobb County all that

well. We need to bypass most politically correct person for the

job and go back to best person for the job. We're guilty of

attaching too many strings to these positions.

As a Kell graduate, I have to say that I am pleased to hear of this news. The students of Kell high school deserve to have a principal that always puts them first regardless of if they are members of the football team or band program. Donovan let the very teachers that propelled her school into the national and internatonal spot light walk away before her cery eyes. Her lack of leadership and control of her administration led her to say goodbuy to a band director for example, David McGrath, who devoted his life to his Kell students. He was one of the exceptional educators that Kell once had but lost under Donovan's leadership. I left Kell a proud graduate but have since watched from the sidelines as Trudie Donovan destroyed something I once loved with mediocre educators who care about themselves and their well-being. I pray for the Kell students that they gain a principal that can restore the moral at Kell becasue right now it is at an all time low and we all have her to thank for it.

Kell is a broken school. It always has been. The joke is that it was built on an Indian burial ground. Some classes are over-crowded and some have as few as 13 students. The schedule has been changed too many times to count. If the county can possibly hire the wrong person for this job, it will.

I'm not in Kell district; however, one of my children has autism and we, his parents, have had to continue to speak out in making sure his needs are met and his federal rights are not violated. If CCSD can take short cuts, they will; they count on parents not knowing their rights and will rely on intimidation tactics to cut corners. Remain active and vocal. Even in high school, you are your child's advocate. Know your rights. Use your voice. File complaints with the state. Make them investigate. (Skip medidation: it's a waste of time). Continue to fight back. After all, the biggest bullies in the county reside on Glover Street.

I don't have ANY children in Cobb Schools any longer, THANK GOD. This is just information for the person with the autistic child in high school. PLEASE CONTACT REHABILITATION SERVICES, WHICH IS A STATE AGENCY, under the DOL state 'umbrella', THEY HAVE SO MUCH TO OFFER SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENTS AND THEIR EMPLOYEES ARE SO TUNED IN TO WANTING TO HELP THEM. Few counselors in the school system are tuned in, much less do they care.

After reading everyones complaints, well wishes and mostly happily saying good byes. It appears the problem is the class sizes. I do not know Ms. Donovan, but the principal cannot do a thing about this. You can blame it all on the CCSB, as they are the ones voting in the class size numbers. And why on earth with everychild having a cell phone, does any of them not record the teachers comments who tell them they will fail or pass with a C during this class? Oh yes all these kids know how to do is surf the internet for answers and text their friends!

I suggest you all show up at the next board meeting and make youselves heard there.

But I know you won't!

Your all cowards!!!!!!! Posting and venting on MDJ will not do a damn thing!!!!

Neither will a PhD who sits as the chair of that Board and misses the local Toast Masters meetings... He's that educated and cannot use proper grammer, nor make a statement without the words 'uh' and 'um' being invoked into each statement AT LEAST once. When they get TRAINED PROFESSIONALS to lead then they will understand. Money grubbing glory mongors. That's what sits on your school board.

When Kell opened in 2002, John Flatt hired the best faculty I've ever had the honor to work with. After a few years, most (not all) of the excellent, experienced teachers left. Trudie did her best to make it uncomfortable for so many of us. I honestly believe she consciously set out to run us off. After an extended illness, I left when she did not hold my position. As it turned out I was happy not to be a part of her botched scheduling fiasco the following year. There will always be a warm place in my heart for Kell's students, parents and teachers. Wishing you all the best of luck, even Trudie.

Danita, thank you for including your name - so many of the comments of "coward" etc. are nameless contributors. When I was a Kell parent, Trudie called a meeting to discuss the new "modified block" she was forcing on the community. Her idea of an open forum was for her to speak, and for us to write down our questions and our emails and she would address them later. She even went so far as to tell a theater full of parents and community members "You're dismissed" as if we were children. I wish her well, but I wish Kell more, because as I always would tell her, the two most important assets I have are tied to that school - my children and my home. I hope the superintendent has the wherewithal to hire a competent and intelligent principal for the school.

Can we remember another issue here? Let's not forget about the student who was taken advantage of by a teacher on staff. Test scores, overcrowding, bad morale mean nothing when student safety is not met. That is a principal's number one priority. Failure to report an issue about student safety is unacceptable. Period.

I do not agree with bullying teachers. I hate it for the teachers if that is what has been going on at Kell. However, there are problems that need to be fixed and we need someone who will give them the attention they deserve. I have also been told there is a math teacher telling his classes the first day many of the students will fail. My child sat on a lab table almost an entire semester during a science class due to overcrowding, except for the days she was lucky enough for someone to be absent from class. However, I am not sure if this is not due to scheduling issues. Do they have this problem in the other schools that have the same or similar square footage and even more students? Also, my child stated her AP teacher said she was done a week before the exam and they really didn't do much more after that. That is valuable time that could have been spent in review. I don't want an administrator to bully the teachers, but changes need to be made.

All these reports of Kell classes being so overcrowded made me take a look at the CCSD's 2007 McKibben Report that contained population projections for the schools and the county's stated capacity for each institution.

That report states that Kell has a capacity of 1,912 students. However, the population of the school was projected to be 1,903 in 2008-2009 and was projected to remain below the 1,912 figure for every school year until 2016-2017 - when the estimate shows 1,908 students.

In fact, the October 2011 FTE Report prepared for Georgi'as Dept of Education for Kell shows they had 1,681 students enrolled...well below the 1,810 students CCSD had projected via the McKibben Report for this school year.

It would seem that, while the school is well under capacity, they have specific classes that are way over capacity - an administrative/scheduling issue. Hopefully, some new leadership will be able to address such issues so that the school can better serve the students.

According to the GA Department of Education, School Report Card, Kell had 1,709 students in 2010/2011. I'm not sure why there would be an issue with overcrowding.

|
June 08, 2012
Has the public had their collective heads in the sand? Classes are overcrowded because they have been cutting the number of teachers. It doesn't have anything to do with the physical capacity of the school or scheduling issues. Fewer teachers means more students per class.
anonymous
|
June 09, 2012
The problem is not overcrowding due to enrollment, but increased student allotments for specific classes. Have you not paid attention to the science teachers crying for relief for class sizes? Are you not aware that yet again CCSD raised class size by two students? If you think high school classes were crowded last year, just wait until August. It's not just Kell, and it's not the scheduling issue.

My message contained no questions but maybe it should have because my knowledge on this subject is quite limited. While some (if not most) seem to want to use the blog to yell and complain, I am trying to better understand the issue.

My head has not been in the sand and I have read about the increases in class sizes and RIF. And, of course, that leads to classes being too large. But is the school's principal powerless in this situation? Can they not look at their faculty/student needs and adjust them accordingly? The school's administration has known that the classes were over crowded for how long and have yet to find a real solution? And, honestly, was anyone surprised when the workforce was decreased this year...or next year for that matter because tax revenues are NOT going up anytime soon. Where is the plan on the part of the administration to deal with these issues?

In the corporate world we have to make these decisions based on projections all the time and, while it would be great to blame the Board of Directors, the truth is, I am responsible for my Department. And in the last few years we have had to do much more with much less - the new normal.

In education, it seems all blame falls to the CCSD and the individual schools are left powerless and unable to develop a plan...am I reading this incorrectly? So, at this point, I have to disagree and hold to my conclusion that it is an administrative/scheduling issue. reading the other blogs it appears this didn't suddenly happen at Kell with the RIF...it has been an oh-going issue that appears to have been ignored. Otherwise, how is it that other schools are able to be overcapacity and still address the needs of their students?

AND, THEIR BOARD MEETINGS ARE A *JOKE*!

THEY THROW GOOD EMPLOYEES TO THE WIND BECAUSE THEY ARE 'TOO OLD TO WORK' AND HAVE EMPLOYEES WHO ARE TOO LAZY TO WORK JUST DRAWING A PAYCHECK.

WATCH THE BOARD MEETINGS ON THE PUBLIC TV CHANNEL.

THE NEW BOARD CHAIR CAN'T EVEN USE PROPER GRAMMAR.

As the parent of Kell students, yesterday was truly a relief. I can only hope the Board will use this opportunity to completely clean house, especially in the non-functioning Math Department. One Math teacher openly tells students on the first day of class they will be lucky to leave his class with a grade of "C" and stats will show most fail his class. He has numerous complaints against him and yet he still teaches? How is hearing a statement such as that on the first day of class supposed to motivate students? Isn't it his job to ensure his students have the knowlege they need, not to fulfill his twisted need to prove he's a tough teacher or whatever his agenda may be?! Not only is Kell failing to teach our children, they are failing to protect them. I know firsthand of bullying incidences with nothing being done except to sweep them under the rug. The atmosphere for the students is one of hostility and many students do not have happy memories of their high school years. Talking to the administrators is a worthless, fruitless effort. It's time to bring on Dr. Chris Ritchie! He worked wonders in turning around both McCleskey and Lassiter. Now it's time to bring him back to Kell as the Principal!

|
June 08, 2012
It it can' be Dr. Chris Ritchie, it must be someone who is well liked by his peers. To be honest, Kell got worse year by year as the other administrators left, like Dr Ritchie. Mrs Donavan got to train her administration her way, bullying the teachers. Although Ms Gomez was not friendly with most of the Kell teachers, she was great with student discipline. Dr Giles, Dana Carlton and Richmond Parker need to be retrained on teamwork instead of bullying the teachers.

That math teachers comment sounds like my other childs college professor. I had never heard a math teacher there be negative with a child. Maybe the statement is taken out of context. The problem with the math at Kell is 1 in 8 students does their homework in the 9 and 10th grades. I drove my kids early plenty of times to get extra help. The teachers call parents but nothing changes till the last 3 weeks of school when the students begin to care. Teachers come in early and some stay afer for tutoring but very few students show up for extra help.
Happy Trails Trudie!

@ Kell Parent and Sub - No, it was not taken out of context. I actually did not believe the comment was made until two other parents told me their children had told them about the comment - one parent mirrored the exact words told to me by my son. Of course they're not going to say things like this in front of another adult.

My child graduated in 2011. He had the same issues with this particular math teacher. Students struggled terribly all year. The practice tests on his blog did not help prepare him for the actual quizes/tests. We went to Ms. Donovan, who actually tutored him and has done so with many students. At a parent/teacher open house night, this teacher informed us that he was in the corporate world for years and had made the decision to change careers. Maybe now is the time for him to retire.

On the upside, there are a handful of caring, excellent teachers at Kell. I am hoping that things will turn around now since I still have another child enrolled there.

August 05, 2012
Dr. Ritchie was a disaster at McCleskey! I had a first hand run in with him and his solution to the issue at hand was if I didnt like the way he ran "HIS SCHOOL" to leave the district. He was promptly reminded that he WORKED FOR ME! Not only did I NOT leave the district, after going over his head HE was sent to Lassiter the next year. It seems as though these people forget they work for us and it is our job to remind them.

All I have to say after reading these comments is... now I see what is wrong with our youth... "the parents"! As a parent of a student at Kell, I am so embarrassed by these comments; for instance, let's sum it up... Luckily my child did not take CHEMESTRY and I am sorry the staff DON'T recognize your kid. Let's take some responsibility for our children and their education and maybe the chemistry will be better at Kell High School and just maybe the staff will recognize your kid!

|
June 08, 2012
The chemistry teacher was great, and most students overall were well behaved, but with that many students and that hard a subject, it is very hard to get one on one attention some students may need. I believe core classes like science, math and english should not be over the 32 student class size when many are 36-38 students.
former student
|
June 10, 2012
firstly, i feel i should point out that there are three chem teachers at kell with very disparate levels of ability to teach and engage the students.

secondly, it doesn't follow that taking responsibility for your own children will make the teachers any better at teaching, or the staff more likely to recognize students.

thirdly, the issue in one of the comments to which you refer is that the principal of the school does not know who most of her students are, not that some other staff member not directly responsible for the students does not know the students.

finally i don't understand why you, a parent, would blame a group that includes yourself for a problem and not take responsibility for that problem.

Wow...why couldn't this have happen 4 years ago so my student would not have had to face a new schedule yearly, horrible Math situation, cutting out classes that the students actually enjoyed and benefitted from, athelethic program that lacks in all areas and certain teachers that show favortism. My student will forever be affected by what went on at Kell personally and to classmates! A CC school should NOT be allowing the things that go on at Kell High School, teenagers need roll models not treating situations coming from coaches and teachers.

*Football players passing classes during football season but yet don't graduate!?

*A Certian volunteer/outside coach in the football program having way to much say in the sports programs.

*An atheletic director that needs to look in the mirror at what's the right thing to do for the student atheletes

She should retire with her head held high in the knowledge that she has had such a positive impact on so many.
