EDITOR’S NOTE: Below is a selection of the responses from readers of MDJOnline.com in reaction to recent MDJ stories.

School super: ‘Tough cuts’ best recommendation …

Frankie58 — Does the Board even know what this guy is doing or do they have their heads in the sand. He is hell bent on spending a lot of money and doesn’t or won’t specify were it is all coming from, with a $62 million deficit, is anyone on this Board going to remind him who he works for?

TIC — Was this guy (Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa) sent here from Texas to purposely sabotage our school system? Cobb has been a much admired and school system for many years. What in the wide, wide world of sports is going on here?

Frogbreath — TIC, Hinojosa has divided the community in the sense that the desperate are leaping on the “Let’s tax seniors bandwagon” again. The luster of Cobb schools has a big smear on it now. It was started by the administration and the board and is now being even more widely smeared by panicky parents.

Pay Up Seniors — @ frogbreath, trust me, that school tax is no easier for those under 62 to pay than it is for seniors to pay it. I hear lots of whining about seniors living on fixed incomes. Well, real wages have not gone up in over 10 years and most folks no longer get a COLA in their salaries. Seniors do get a COLA adjustment, unlike the rest of working population. Let’s do away with that senior exemption now.

Sleepyhead2 — @ PayupSeniors: I paid for decades and decades for my kids’ school taxes as well as all the others. Quit your complaining and shut up, it’s your turn to pay them. This is the first year in 3 that a COLA raise was even given, and for some it averaged a big $7 to 25 more per month. I’m sure that allowed them to immediately jet off to Monte Carlo and frolic with the rich and famous. I’m 66, work full time, have survived breast cancer and have mega medical co-pays, and raise a grand-child full time and cover her expenses as well as my own. So put a sock in it, I’m tired of your bullspit.

Cobb Watcher — Bringing in TFA is an insult to the dedicated teachers of Cobb County and must not happen. Hinojosa’s contract must be terminated and the CCSB replaced.

Rjsnh — The superintendent’s budget proposal is an insult to teachers who no longer seem to be regarded as professional educators anymore, but rather a commodity holding little value within the educational system. How much more work are teachers supposed to do for how much less pay before saying ENOUGH.

Hannibal — If Dr. H would go back to Texas and the School Board would apply his salary to the deficit this would be a starter. Then do away with all of his hired helpers.

Anonymous — Pursuing “Teach for America,“ especially with lost teaching positions does not seem right. It also alienates KSU — a school that prepares students to be teachers. There is a disconnect there and it does not smell right.

REAL Teachers! — CCSD is partners with KSU in a 9 MILLION dollar federal grant to create a new education program at KSU called the urban ed program. The goal of the grant it to “prepare teachers for the express purpose of serving as exemplary educators in at-risk urban schools.“ Does Hinojosa even know this exists in his district?

Mad Mom — Cut here, cut there. Our schools cannot continue to go on this way. Our students deserve better. We need to increase the revenue that CCSD has. We need to either raise property taxes and / or increase the age of who pays property taxes.
