According to police, Cpl. Gene Crawford, 53, was going north on South Cobb Drive at the intersection with Ridge Road around 3 p.m. when Jennifer Cook, 21, who was driving in the opposite direction, turned left in front of him. Crawford hit Cook’s 1997 Nissan Maxima and reportedly flew over the hood, landing on the other side.
Cook fled the scene but was arrested shortly afterward.
Crawford, who has been with Smyrna Police for 29 years, suffered two broken ankles, a broken leg and a broken hip.
Cook is charged with hit and run and seriously injury by a vehicle, both felonies, and failure to yield left turn, a misdemeanor. She is being held in the Smyrna City Jail pending transfer to the Cobb Jail. Her bail has been set at $25,000.
