KENNESAW — A Kennesaw family is grieving the loss of their son, Army First Lt. Jonathan P. Walsh, who was killed Sunday while serving in Afghanistan.

Walsh, 28, was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 504th Infantry, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, based out of Fort Bragg, N.C. He died Sunday after an improvised explosive device blew up his vehicle, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Walsh, an infantry platoon leader, died on the scene.

Private First Class Michael Metcalf, 22, of Boynton Beach, Fla., an infantryman in Walsh’s platoon, was also killed in the blast, which hit their vehicle as they were traveling in the southern Ghazni province, near Kabul.

A memorial service was scheduled on Forward Operating Base Arian in Afghanistan, where the two paratroopers served.

Walsh was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division in August 2011.

Before joining the Army in March 2010, he worked five months as director of sales for Reliable Security LLC, a Marietta event security company, according to his LinkedIn profile. Before that, he was a consultant for two years for Zurvita, a Houston-based marketing company. He was previously employed as a credit manager for Wells Fargo Financial.

In the spring of 2008, Walsh graduated with a bachelor of business administration degree in management from Kennesaw State University, according to the university. In 2005, he also earned an associate of science degree from Georgia Highland College, according to LinkedIn.

His interests included fitness, nutrition and outdoor activities, according to the website.

Walsh is survived by his wife, Debbra, and son, and Austin Walsh of Raeford, N.C., located just outside Fort Bragg; and his parents, Paul and Carolyn Walsh of Kennesaw.
