SMYRNA — While Raquel Nelson’s attorney was readying her appeal on Monday, a mother and her two children were hospitalized after getting hit while crossing a busy Smyrna road.

Smyrna Police Officer Michael Smith said Lisa Stark, 25, of Smyrna, was trying to cross Concord Road at Hollis Street with her 5-year-old and 7-month-old children to get to a bus stop around 7:45 a.m. when they were hit by a 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Lawren Butcher, 54, of Smyrna.

Stark lost control of the 5-year-old, who ran out across the four-lane road, police said.

Stark was taken to Kennestone Hospital with a broken ankle and was released Monday. The children were taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston with minor injuries and should be released today.

Butcher, who was not injured, has not been charged because initial investigations show that it was a “low-speed collision,” Smith said.

Smith said Stark could be charged because she and her children were not in a crosswalk.

“They were running across the road during rush hour,” he said.

I don't understand all of the comments against a Mary Kirkendoll but she's right. This city isn't pedestrian friendly. Sometimes it's just plain unfriendly. And the citizens seem to be lemmings following their leaders off the cliff. I'm waiting for our next promotion so I can say Bye, Bye, Smyrna.

I am sick and tired of Mary Kirkendoll spew her sick hatred about Smyrna. Just because she is stuck in the recession and can't sell her house on Oakview Drive and move to Dekalb County!!!

Mary if you keep on running down Smyrna you are Never going to sell your house, You are cutting off your own foot by running down your own town. All the hatred you put out is only hurting YOU>

Amen. But it's impossible to reason with the mentally ill, and I'm convinced dear MK most certainly belongs among those unfortunate ranks. Smyrna is a wonderful place to live, as those of us who live without hatred well know.

Smyrna is not a pedestrian friendly town.

While other cities focus on traffic 'calming' solutions, city of Smyrna has an outdated model of highways, traffic, automoblies & cement.

It's a shame , really,.. w/ it's location,... it HAD potential. Too late really-Its noticeable when you come from East Cobb, Sandy Springs or city of Atlanta,.. you know you're here when the trees disappear, you see no quaint areas, no resturants, shops, bikelanes or pedestrian crosswalks!!

If you want quality of life, Smyrna is certainly not the place!

Pedestrian friendly does not equal the expectation to jaywalk on a busy main thoroughfare without getting hit.
Marietta is Great

Seriously, you need to get out more, as in - out of metro Atlanta. East Cobb, Sandy Springs and the City of Atlanta are no more pedestrian friendly than the City of Smyrna. You might find a neighborhood or two around that are better than others but to say anything as large as Sandy Springs is pedestrian friendly is a joke. Have you been anywhere North Springs High School lately? How about the Prado or Hammond Drive? Really?!?
