MARIETTA — Alice Stouder, Cobb’s deputy superintendent of leadership and learning, confirmed Monday that she will retire as of June 30. Her decision comes less than three weeks after the school board voted, 6-1, to renew her contract for another year.

Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa will recommend to the school board today that Dr. Cheryl Hungerford, the district’s chief of staff, take Stouder’s place, and that area assistant superintendent Dr. Angela Huff step in as chief of staff.

Stouder, 56, has spent her entire career in Cobb Schools. She began teaching at Murdock Elementary School in northeast Cobb in 1978, after earning a bachelor’s in education at Georgia State University. She also has masters’ degrees in middle grades education and in administration from Georgia State, and an educational specialist degree from Jacksonville State University.

“I went into administration after about six years, which is pretty early, but I love administration work,” said Stouder, who has also been an assistant principal, principal and an area assistant superintendent in Cobb. “I love the people in Cobb, and I’ve made fabulous friendships over the past 34 years.”

At this time last year, Stouder was interim deputy superintendent and believed to be a candidate for the top job.

Her contract for next year was renewed by the school board on March 22, though board member Kathleen Angelucci voted against it in the 6-1 vote.

Stouder denied her decision to retire stemmed from that vote.

“Absolutely not,” she said.

As for what she’ll do in retirement, Stouder is not sure. Her mother has Alzheimer’s, she said.

“Since I took this position, I see her maybe once a week, and it’s really starting to take its toll on her and me. I think she deserves better and I’ve got my years in,” she said.

Hinojosa said Stouder will be greatly missed.

“I understand her family situation and respect her decision. She was of tremendous help to me in my first year,” he said. “Even though she is retiring, I hope she can continue to be an asset to the district she loves so much.”

Stouder was named as the deputy superintendent of leadership and learning last September along with a nearly $10,000 pay raise after Hinojosa reorganized his executive cabinet. She and five others got pay raises and her salary increased from $129,998 to $138,000.

Things are tight and when someone leaves the position is immediately filled but teachers may get the axe. Hmm, are we in Denmark?

C'mon MDJ get the real scoop on this retirement. No one retires after getting a promotion and a raise unless something is up. I'm glad Ms. Stouder has the years to walk if the situation was difficult. Many of us have to continue in "challenging" work enviorments until we can get a transfer or wait for retirement. Good luck , Alice !

Alice is a true lady and dedicated professional. What a wonderful person and loss for Cobb. Word is that Hinojosa gave her a bad evaluation and she was completely caught off guard by his actions of "you do all the work, I take all the pay" and then let me slam you to make sure you realize I am in charge. After all, with the retirement rules, she needed two years of her Deputy pay for the best retirement package and she stops after one year - no one would stop with one year to go unless the pressure was too much. Can someone ask no vote Angulicci to vote NO on Hinojosa.

Wasn't the vote 6-1? Why would Angelucci's vote have any bearing on Mrs. Stouder's decision to leave? If it did, why wouldn't Saint Stouder be honest and say so?

Inside Cobb; go back inside. You are definitely an insider.

I guess the pressure was too much...makes no sense to leave after one year when she needs two years for her Deputy pay.. I for one am very tired of opening the MDJ and reading mostly negative things about CCSD..they need to clean up their act and start working together!!

Alice was a great principal but lost focus after moving to the central office. When she got her real estate salesperson license while a principal at Nicholson, she changed. She used here connection of the employees and students to recruit business for her and her real estate partner team at Keller Williams and lost focus on the task at hand. When she got the Area superintendent job her potential real estate network increased even more. It’s a shame the school district allowed this activity to go on. Well the good thing is Alice can sell real estate full time in the fall.

I have had the pleasure of working with Alice many years ago during her early years in administration. Alice is a great person and very professional. CCSD will be losing a treasure. I wish you the best, Alice. Enjoy your retirement and your new freedom to spend time with your mom.

Dumb question

about her leaving due to the vote. 6-1? Not really a mandate considering that Angelucci has no interest in qualifications. She is using her vote to try to rid the system of those she doesn't like personally. Nothing to do with their abilities.

Enjoy your retirement.

Stouder will definitely be missed. 99% of Cobb's faculty/administration that know her, adore her. You know, with all of the switching around and people taking over for retirees, there is one area superintendent that has not gone any where. It looks like Dale Gaddis is finally getting what's coming to him. He has applied for superintendent's positions in other counties, and nobody wants him. His cruelty to others, especially in Area 2, is keeping him from being promoted from within the CCSD.

I say get rid of this scoundrel once and for all!

Amen to that! I can't see where DG has ever done anything positive for Area 2. He believes he is a genius and all he does is promote his ineffective buddies to positions of power! He has managed to run off some of the best in Area 2.

I would like to apply for the Chief of Staff position. I'm a more qualified candidate than Ms. Huff.

I would think the people of Cobb would want the best candidates to be considered.

Mike, good luck! I would like to see CCSD look outside for some of these positions or re-evaluate the need to fill it at all in light of budget issues!

Stouder is an influential leader and one of the best. One of her most defining qualities is that she understands people and knows how to motivate them in a positive way to achieve a common goal. She will be missed in many ways.
