MARIETTA – The City of Marietta announced today that Canton Road will be closed at Highway 41 in mid-April for eight months while workers replace that bridge and the CSX railroad bridge and realign the roadway.

Commuters should avoid the area altogether and use the Canton Road Connector as a detour.

“The bridge is being replaced partly because of the low sufficiency rating determined by GDOT bridge inspections,” said City of Marietta Public Works director Dan Conn. “While the bridge is not currently dangerous, it is one of the oldest we have in the city and nearing the end of its safe and useful life.”

“If you're familiar with the old bridge structure, it was very low and you can see where tractor trailers have hit it,” Conn said. “The railroad bridge is very old as well so they're looking at replacing it too.”

Conn expects construction, which costs approxi-mately $11.2 million and is funded by GDOT, and the lane closures to begin in mid-April and be com-plete within eight months.
