HHArt benefits Hickory Hills Elementary Arts Academy at 500 Redwood Drive in Whitlock Heights area. It features a silent auction with seven original works created by professional artists — with some help from Hickory Hills students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
HHArt was started in 2011 to raise awareness of the Hickory Hills’ Integrated Arts Program that provides kindergartners through fifth grade students a comprehensive, sequential academic program that incorporates the performing and visual arts in the teaching of core courses. HHArt provides students a rare opportunity to work with artists to create professional pieces of art. “We invited at least one professional artist to work with each grade level on an art project,” said Elizabeth Vickery, who co-chairs the event with Jana Chesney and Katy Wilder. “Each artist that works with a class makes the project a learning experience for the students,” Vickery said.
Students receive a lesson and participate with the artist to create a piece of art in the artist’s style. “It’s a hands-on experience with a professional artist,” she said. “It allows the children to see the process.”
Artists who donated their time and talent include Frank Buckner, Susan Easton Burns (represented by dk Gallery), Maureen Engle, John Fite, Darby Jones, Laura Surace and Kathy Walton.
Hickory Hills is nationally recognized for its success as a learning laboratory through the Integrated Arts Program. “The Marietta community can be proud of the school’s accomplishments and support this effort to raise funds for the program,” Vickery said. “(HHArt) is a lot of fun, and we had great success with it last year.”
HHArt takes place on the second floor of MCMA at 30 Atlanta St. during Martinis & Music. The event is open to the public. Admission is free for $8 and free for museum members.
