SMYRNA — Whitefield Academy has named its new upper school principal.

Jason Van Bemmel, 39, comes to the Smyrna-area private school from Faith Presbyterian Church and Faith Christian Academy in Cheraw, S.C, where he served as senior pastor and school headmaster. He is replacing Susan Banke, who is retiring from Whitefield at the end of this school year.

“Jason has an educator’s mind and a pastor’s heart, making him the perfect candidate for this pivotal role in the future of our students and their educational journey,” said Kevin Bracher, Whitefield’s interim headmaster.

Van Bemmel worked his way up from teaching American government, British literature, Latin and worldviews to heading New Covenant Christian School in Abingdon, Md., which doubled in size during his eight years of leadership before he moved to South Carolina.

“The Whitefield Academy community is excited about welcoming Jason and his family to our school, and benefitting from his exceptional skills and inspirational talent as we grow our upper school program,” Bracher said.

Bemmel has an undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland and two master’s degrees, one from Covenant College in educational leadership and the second from the Reformed Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C.
