MARIETTA — WellStar Health System announced that Candice Saunders, formerly WellStar executive vice president and WellStar Kennestone Hospital president, has been promoted to chief operating officer for the system.
In her new role, Saunders will have full operational responsibility for WellStar’s five hospitals, imaging centers, health parks and outpatient rehabilitation. Saunders joined WellStar in May 2007 as WellStar Kennestone Hospital COO and was promoted to president in August 2007.
Prior to joining WellStar, she served as vice president of Inova Health System and COO of Inova Fairfax Hospital and the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute. She began her career as a cardiac nurse and has more than 30 years of health care experience, including serving as a chief nursing officer and overseeing cardiovascular and specialty programs at the University of Alabama Hospital and Emory University Health System.
Saunders has a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida and a MBA and MHA from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Succeeding Saunders as president of WellStar Kennestone Hospital is Dan Woods, formerly WellStar senior vice president and WellStar Kennestone Hospital COO.
Prior to joining WellStar in May 2012, Woods served as senior vice president of Verras, an organization that helps hospitals enhance quality and improve cost efficiency. He also served as vice president of operations at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago with responsibility for cardiovascular, neurosciences, organ transplantation and oncology service lines.
Woods has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Iowa and a MBA from the University of Chicago.
