“I make a bead from the actual flower,” said creator and CEO Phyllis Kiernan, who has worked in floral preservation and the creation of beautiful shadow boxes since 2009. She uses the same floral preservation process to make jewelry. She hand-rolls petals, then cures and glazes them into beads that can be incorporated into bracelets, necklaces, bookmarks and other sentimental pieces.
The Acworth resident spent the summers with her grandmother caring for prized African violets. Kiernan said, “I have these flower passions.”
Kiernan looked for something to do that she would enjoy as she was facing divorce and her last child was going off to school. The mother of two adult children said, “It all kind of evolved.”
Kiernan knew there was a market in floral preservation after receiving preserved flowers from a friend in 2003 upon the death of her 21-year-old stepson.
“I know how special those flowers are. That’s where I got the idea,” she said. “I wanted to bring that to other people. It’s not something that many do.”
After opening the floral preservation business, Kiernan realized she could reach a larger audience by offering a solution to keeping their flowers in a new and unique way.
“I looked into the meaning of flowers, and it led me into the flower essence and incorporating it into beads and the beads into jewelry or keepsake piece,” she said.
Working for a year to perfect the bead making method, she opened Fleurenasci in March 2011. She said, “Each piece holds a sentiment which is unique to each individual.”
Kiernan said options for pieces are endless, even if you do not have flowers of your own to preserve, such as in stock pieces, special orders by selecting the flower and color that convey the desired sentiment or memory, as well as custom-made pieces.
“I look at flowers now, and I don’t just see the flower. I see what it could be in a piece and how it could be worn every day or used every day,” she said. For more information, visit www.fleurenasci.com or call (404) 644-8672.
