The editorial on arming school teachers proves that in the world of the clueless even a horrible idea is better than no idea at all. After state legislatures have finished cutting back teachers, dismantling their unions, cutting salaries, insurance and pensions in the name of fiscal austerity some now suggest that educators become Navy SEALS. Naturally they would want the teachers to provide firearms and training at their own expense, otherwise it would have to come out of the pockets of the taxpayers.
That ain’t gonna happen. After all don’t many provide pencils, paper and other school supplies out of their own pockets?
Only in the fantasy world of right wing Rambos could a young educator expect to confront a suicidal lunatic in body armor, armed with high-capacity firearms, intent on killing as many people as possible before he kills himself and win.
This point however is probably moot. Nothing will be done. The politicians will have their pockets lined with NRA money. A fearful people will help firearm manufacturers make billions. The tiny coffins and heroic teachers of Newtown will be buried and forgotten with all the others. The flowers, teddy bears, dolls and pin-wheels will eventually be taken to the dump. America will again watch Honey Boo Boo, “Dancing with the Stars” and “American Idol” just as before, until the next slaughter. Then the pitiful process will begin all over again.

In recent weeks, the NRA has been exposed as a toothless tiger. Most of it's "All In" candiates were defeated in 2012. It's time to stand up to the gun lobby and their supporters and impose an assault weapons and high capacity magazine ban and repeal the law that shields gun manufacturers from financial liability.
