Sweeney not first on school board with Promethean ties

DEAR EDITOR:

Sunday’s MDJ included an article titled “Board of Education’s Scott Sweeney has ties to education tech company.” It states that “one market the company (Promethean) hasn’t broken into is the Cobb County School District.” One could argue that Promethean broke into CCSD quite a few years ago.

While I am unaware of exact numbers, I know quite a few schools in the CCSD have access to Promethean boards. I believe, in fact, that some schools have a Promethean board installed in almost every classroom.

When would the MDJ consider the “untapped” CCSD business threshold broken? Admittedly, my information could be outdated since I have been out of the education profession for almost five years.

That being said, I wonder who was consulting for Promethean back then, since Mr. Sweeney was not yet elected to his first term on the BoE?

All you have to do is look at who has driven the vendor selection for all the technology purchases in recent years and you will see who has some conflict of interest. But, hey, we can name them interim Sup instead.

The Board of Education approved bids with no dollar limits and catchall line items. This process has allowed millions upon millions to be funneled to the favored vendor.

I, fo one, am proud of the MDJ for exposing something Sweeney should have disclosed himself. Let the chips fall where they may. I think you stand alone in your high opinion of Sweeney. Best board member. Savior of the district? I think not.

@Dr Teresa - My letter is addressing the well known fact that CCSD has been in business with Promethian for years, a relationship which the MDJ chose to characterize as "untapped." Also, The MDJ did not expose Sweeney. Sweeney "exposed" himself with a registered letter to the Board Chair and legal counsel in Dec. That fact was somehow also left out of the article. Fair and balanced reporting? Also, I did not refer to Mr. Sweeney as "best board member" or savior of the district." Simply interested in accurate reporting.

Dear Marietta Daily Journal

I hope you are proud of yourselves. Today's article probably effectively closes Scott Sweeney's campaign for re-election. Congratulations - you have deprived CCSD of the best board member they had. The voice of reason, the one who encouraged the board to stick to facts not feelings, the one who was key to the solution to the budget crisis this year. I hope you feel very satisfied with yourselves. Next year when there is insufficient budget, and the millage rate has to be raised, LEST has to be imposed, and yet we still have more furlough days and less teachers, I hope you remember the reason why. It will all be traceable to this moment in time MDJ. Congratulations.
